The ideal candidate in this position thrives in a customer service role and has a good understanding of building permit processes. They will review building permit applications for completeness and compliance with established guidelines. They will provide assistance and answer questions from the general public regarding building permits. They will also perform a variety of clerical tasks relative to their assigned area of responsibility.
We currently have one vacancy in the Development Services Department in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.

Responsibilities- Review building permit applications for completeness and adherence to established guidelines and building plans; ensure conformity with applicable building and land use codes.
- Accept plans and related documents; review plans for conformity with ordinances and regulations to determine whether plans contain sufficient data to either issue a permit or accept for plan review; check plans for setbacks, zoning and building requirements; enter data into computer and set fees; sign off on projects as necessary and issue permits.
- Verify completeness of permits and overall project status relative to all City departments; issue Certificates of Occupancy.
- Receive, review, approve and process small scale projects including fences, sheds, decks and small additions; issue permits.
- Route plans to planning staff or other staff for further review and analysis; receive plan revisions and attach to original plans; respond to questions regarding status of plans.
- Provide architects, contractors and property owners with appropriate codes and building requirements; verify contractors have valid licenses to obtain permit.
- Calculate and collect fees, fines and other charges for permit applications and plan checking activities in accordance with established guidelines.
- Assist in the retrieval of information regarding various planning and public works projects; maintain accurate records and reports of plan checking operations.
- Coordinate address assignment to structures and subdivisions under construction when permits are requested; coordinate addressing with developers, other City departments, and outside agencies.
- Respond to questions and inquiries from the general public, contractors, developers, architects and various other agencies regarding building permits; log and process complaints.
- Perform related duties as required.
High school diploma or equivalent
Work ExperienceTwo years of responsible clerical experience involving front counter public contact, including one year of experience in processing regulatory applications, building permits, plan review, inspections, or similar work.
Certificate- Must possess or have the ability to obtain ICC Permit Technician Certificate within one year of employment.
