Position: Re-Engagement Specialist (40 hrs/wk, 260 days)

re-engagement specialist

under general supervision of unity support coordinator, finds students who are not enrolled in school and assist them in identifying an appropriate educational setting and re-enrollment. Incumbent performs related work as required.

exemplary duties/responsibilities

seeks to find missing students and responds to requests to investigate and evaluates students with habitual truancy who have dropped out of school; consults with schools, locates students, parents, guardians and/or other responsible adults; interviews relevant parties either in person or by telephone; works with school, students and parent or guardians to and student to complete an in-take and assessment with a goal of re-enrollment in an appropriate educational setting;

works closely with the family advocates and accountability to coordinate efforts to find students and assist them in re-entry into the education system; gathers data and prepares detailed reports of finding; maintains records and correspondence as required by district policies and procedures; contacts and works with community agencies such as: social service, law enforcement, recreational, religious, educational and legal services;

refers students and parents to community programs that will support the student and family; works with school staff; identifies and reports suspected cases of child abuse and neglect; and participates in meetings, in-service training, staff development and other professional growth activities as related to the goal, objectives and activities of the intervention department.

employment standards required
  • education: successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter units from an accredited college or university in psychology, sociology, social services, humanities, criminal justice or related field.
  • experience: two (2) years of successful experience working with at-risk students preferably in an educational setting. Experience in consulting with families and community agencies. Relevant experience in investigative work is helpful.

knowledge of: basic interviewing, counseling and casework principles and techniques; basic investigative techniques; report writing and record-keeping; laws, regulations and procedures affecting truancy issues; and community resources.

skill at: interviewing people from diverse socio-economic, cultural and educational backgrounds and obtaining confidential and sensitive information, understanding, interpreting and explaining complex information to others; interviewing, analyzing and evaluating statements of others; gathering and analyzing investigative materials, exercising good judgment in the assessing of family and personal problems; preparing and maintaining accurate records, case files, statistical reports; accessing information from a computer and writing reports on a computer;

dealing effectively with families, citizens, public and school officials under conditions requiring tact and good judgment; thinking and acting quickly and effectively in emergency situations; understanding and carrying out oral and written instruction; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
