special education facilitator
under the general direction of the special education administrator, the special education facilitator (sef) provides subject matter expertise in assisting principals, teachers, and other district personnel in the implementation of idea, and other applicable federal and state laws and regulations for special education, and washoe county school district’s special education policies and procedures. Provides consultative support for special education teachers and the individualized educational program (iep) team to formulate iep’s and define instructional objectives and techniques for implementation of the iep.
Sef assists the special education teachers with planning and managing to promote program effectiveness and provides consultative support and in‑service activities to other staff personnel. Assists special education teachers through increasing awareness of community resources. Supports wcsd strategic plan goals and objectives related to special education student performance and student learning through embedded, on‑site professional development to build the capacity of special education teachers, which will ensure students are performing at rates commensurate with general education peers and/or achieving goals outlined in the iep.

maintain licensure as appropriate (ex. Asha, doe). Have the ability to provide mentoring and onboarding to incoming related services personnel, including cfy.
essential duties and responsibilities- special education facilitators will support special education teachers by teaching, modeling, and providing embedded training in instructional and behavior management strategies.
- special education facilitators will also work directly with general and special education teachers to model effective co‑teaching strategies, inclusive practices and coordinate with site administrators on how to implement responsible scheduling to ensure students with disabilities are being effectively served and performing at the same level as general education peers.
- provides training and support to address behavior issues for students, including students requiring support through the mtss process.
- provides schools assistance, through mtss teams, to identify supports, collect data, etc. For students not yet identified to receive special education services.
- provides guidance on serving low incident populations as well as ongoing observation of special education teachers to ensure effective strategies are being followed and implemented.
- provides hands‑on support to staff in data collection and using the district’s electronic iep program effectively and efficiently.
- maintains current, actionable knowledge of laws, research, and trends in special education and available district programming and supports in order to provide subject matter expertise and leadership to staff and families.
- education/experience: any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: equivalent to a bachelor's degree in an area of general or special education or related field from an accredited college or university.
- experience: a minimum of five (5) years successful classroom teaching, special education experience preferred.
- qualification into the teacher leadership pool is required. If the qualified candidate selected is not currently in the teacher leadership pool, they must meet annual requirements for professional learning and qualify for the wcsd teacher leadership pool within three years.
