Position: Special Education Para educator Assistant 3 HQ SIP PIVOT (35 hrs/wk, 182 days)

Overview

PARA EDUCATOR ASSISTANT 3 — Special Education. Under general supervision, assists teaching staff in providing individual and group instruction, including developing and maintaining records and instructional materials. Incumbent performs related work as required.

Highly Qualified Status (HQ)

HIGHLY QUALIFIED STATUS (HQ):
Individual selected into this position must be Highly Qualified for this assignment. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and have completed the following requirements:
Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university; or obtained an associate's degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university; or passed the Para Pro Assessment prepared and administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS) with a score of at least 460.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Para educator Assistant II is regularly required to perform academic instructional assistance for a significant portion of the assignment in a Special Education classroom. Additionally, a Para educator Assistant II working at a Title I school must be highly qualified. The Para educator Assistant II class requires additional intensive training beyond and including what is necessary for a Para educator Aide II:
Special Education class; in the areas of student data collection, communication strategies, severe behaviors, and positive behavior management for Autism Spectrum Disorders. It independently prepares materials; implements behaviorally based instructions; develops lesson outlines and detailed computer generated instructional materials; conducts screenings; provides vocational training in the community; prepares graphs, charts, and behavioral analysis data; participates in student IEPs; has in-depth knowledge in communication;

and extensively modifies and adapts the general education curriculum.

Exemplary Duties/Responsibilities
  • Assists teaching staff in a variety of classroom and related areas; assists in preparing lesson outlines and plans in assigned areas; assists in planning, preparing and developing teaching aids; presents subject matter to students using multiple methods;
  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments; presents or reinforces learning concepts; prepares, administers and grades examinations and homework;
  • Observes progress and problem areas of students for referral to the classroom teacher; confers with classroom teacher and parent on progress; prepares classrooms and audio-visual equipment for use;
  • Orders supplies and equipment; maintains classroom bulletin boards; distributes and collects teaching materials; assists in maintaining student discipline and order on the playgrounds, in lunchroom, school halls, library and study halls; operates standard office equipment.

Descriptions of SPED programs include EC - Early Childhood/Pre-K, EC SIP - Early Childhood/SIP, EC STRAT - Early Childhood/Strategies, IK - Integrated Kindergarten, CLS - Comprehensive Life Skills, SIP - Social Intervention Program, STRATEGIES (for autism), SOCIAL RESOURCE, AH - Hearing Impaired, APE Aquatics Program, VI - Vision Impairment. These programs provide developmentally appropriate curriculums addressing child development, literacy, math readiness, communication skills, social-emotional development, and accommodations for various disabilities.

When assigned to these programs, staff may work in various settings including small groups and inclusive classrooms with behavioral supports as described in the program descriptions.

Any experience equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical structure is:

      Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college or university, preferably in child development, education, special education, or related field; AND
    • Experience:

      One (1) year of instructional or guidance experience with students within a program.
