EL Paraeducator Assistant HQ @ Desert Heights ES

Under general supervision of site administration, assists teaching staff in providing English Learner (EL) students with individual and/or group instruction. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining records and instructional materials. Performs related duties as required.

• Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the EL teacher and/or EL Facilitator to support and reinforce language needs and build academic language and content knowledge.
• Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments to present and reinforce learning concepts or pre‑teach to build background knowledge that allows EL students to comprehend or have equitable access to grade‑level (Tier I) content.
• Monitors current and/or former EL student progress toward language/content objectives and targets to provide feedback to students, EL teacher, site facilitator, and/or general education teacher.
• Collaborates with instructional staff to improve the overall quality of student language outcomes.
• Under the direction of the EL teacher/EL Facilitator, helps instruct English learners to demonstrate language acquisition progress and gain academic skills.
• Demonstrates understanding of students’ language needs/proficiency levels and designs lessons to increase receptive and productive language development.
• Demonstrates cooperation, openness for growth, and willingness to contribute to a team approach.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding all aspects of work with children, staff members, and related matters.
• Monitors and assists “newcomer” students as needed in class, at lunch, and recess.
• Models English communication to develop student ability to communicate effectively in the English language.
• Promotes EL students’ self‑esteem through positive language instruction and encouragement.
• Demonstrates an understanding of the social‑cultural context of activities performed in class.
• Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g., classroom, cafeteria, playground) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
• Attends required meetings and in‑service presentations assigned to acquire and/or convey information related to job functions.
• Performs other duties related to the position as assigned.

Any combination of education and experience that could provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and skills would be:

• Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college/university (preferably in child development, education, special education, or related field).
• AND
• One (1) year of relevant experience.

• High school diploma.
• AND
• Two (2) years of experience as a Para educator aide or in a similar instructional/guidance role.
