Temporary Assistant Cook - Reidsville, NC

Role Overview

The Assistant Cook will support the Food Service Director in daily planning and preparation of meals for approximately 2000 annual visitors of the Betsy‑Jeff Penn 4‑H Educational Center. The position will also assist with ensuring kitchen operations remain compliant with state and local health requirements.

• Possess basic food knowledge and cooking skills.
• Wash, chop, peel, cut, and mix ingredients for salad/fruit bar.
• Prepare the assigned meal for the day while being aware of allergens and cross‑contamination.
• Availability to work the open and/or close kitchen shift as needed.
• Clean and sanitize dishes, utensils, work areas, and equipment.
• Maintain dining room cleanliness after meals, taking out trash as needed.
• Receive deliveries using FIFO method to rotate stock in the cooler, freezer, and dry storage; help maintain inventory levels for ordering.
• Other duties as deemed necessary by the Food Service Director.

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• At least one year of kitchen experience.
• Basic knowledge of allergens and food preparation/safety guidelines.
• Valid Serv Safe Manager certification (or ability to obtain within 3 months of start date).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted and stand/walk for extended periods.
• Comfortable working around children and large groups.
• Professionalism, customer service orientation, and ability to work independently under directions.
• Detail oriented, adaptable, and capable of making decisions without the Food Service Director.

Varies depending on the need of the facility. Flexibility to work both open and close as determined by the Food Service Director.
