Per diem, not benefited; minimum of two, 12‑hour shifts per month.

JOB SUMMARY

Provides quality nursing care for maternal and newborn patients. Cooperates with other professional staff to provide services that reflect the caring philosophy of the hospital.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Completes initial nursing histories, assesses patients' conditions and develops an individual plan of care for patients assigned to the unit.
  • Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Accurately administers medications and performs procedures that cannot be delegated including:
    • Assesses labor progression.
    • Manages induction of labor and cervical ripening.
    • Deals competently with medical emergencies: prolapsed cord, breech delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, precipitious delivery, uterine rupture, management of meconium, amnioinfusion, abruptio placenta and placenta previa.
    • Performs fetal heart monitoring.
    • Makes assessment of labor progress.
    • Manages pregnancy‑caused hypertension.
    • Initiates intravenous therapy and use of infusion pumps.
    • Participates in emergency drug administration.
    • Assists with vacuum extractor.
    • Assesses condition of the newborn, including gestational exam.
    • Performs neonatal resuscitation and assists with intubation if required.
    • Recognizes and manages neonatal sepsis.
  • Teaches and supervises the proper performance of nursing acts that have been delegated to others and monitors nursing care of other health‑care team members.
  • Promotes patient/client education and involves the patient and significant others in implementation of health goals.
  • Understands and adheres to Joint Commission standards as they apply to the nursing profession.
  • Participates in fire, safety, disaster and infection control educational programs and exercises.
  • Participates in specific patient quality assessment activities, including chart review.
  • Complies with certification/recertification requirements of the position and attends continuing education courses to remain current in the field.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in regards to the computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation.
  • Actively participates in developing own professional goals. Completes all required education, audits, and in‑service in allotted time frame.
  • ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Behaves in a manner consistent with hospital customer service program.
    • Treats co‑workers and customers as appropriate. Is courteous and helpful in all customer contacts.
  • Meets hospital and departmental dress code and hygiene guidelines.
    • Is familiar with dress code/uniform requirements for department.
    • Dresses consistently in the appropriate attire in respect to position at hospital.
  • Meets Joint Commission and hospital educational standards as required.
  • Is present and prepared for work as scheduled.
  • Demonstrates creativity and initiative in job.
    • Contributes, develops, supports and/or carries out new ideas and methods in cooperation with co‑workers and supervisors.
    • Is self‑motivated.

  • EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Wisconsin.
