The Associate Director, Finance and Administration, will provide management and coordination of administrative and finance-related functions for Stanford ChEM-H with substantial impact on associated multi-schools initiatives. The Associate Director will manage finance and administrative staff to achieve the research and teaching mission, goals, and objectives of ChEM-H in partnership with leadership. This is a senior management position that reports to the Executive Director of ChEM-H and collaborates proactively with the Executive Director in both short-term and long-range planning regarding human resources, operational needs, organizational structure, facilities & planning management, space, and IT for a complex multi-program institute in multiple locations (including Stanford Research Park).
The Director will be responsible for the strategic direction and day-to-day management/supervision of the finance and administrative team members who support the research and training programs of the institute, human resources, property management, space, purchasing and office operations. You should be comfortable working with highly technical scientific and engineering faculty, staff, and students; have experience implementing and optimizing business and staffing plans;
and have excellent time management and organizational skills. - Manage staff in the day‑to‑day operations for functional area(s) of responsibility. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees. Ensure work completion within schedule and constraints.
- Independently or in collaboration with human resources managers, guide faculty supervisors in the interpretation and implementation of human resources policies, procedures, and programs.
- Evaluate business processes and operational and/or financial effectiveness. Analyze and resolve complex issues and provide alternative solutions, as necessary. May lead process improvement for immediate unit.
- Analyze unit needs and make recommendations to leadership for changes in staffing, facilities, health and safety compliance, finance, technology and/or administrative functions. Work with the Chair and/or Dean's Office regarding resources to support faculty activities and interests.
- Interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with university academic and administrative policies and procedures within an operating unit. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines, and procedures.
