Definition

Under general supervision of a special education administrator, plan, develop, and implement individualized educational programs for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Essential Functions and

Job Duties
  • Any one position may not include all of the listed duties, nor do all of the listed examples include all tasks that may be found in positions within this education specialist position.
  • Work as a member of a transdisciplinary team for the initial and ongoing assessment of students
  • Develop Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives for DHH students
  • Provide instruction and or support to DHH students in the development and maintenance of skills specified in the student’s IEP
  • Provide consultation, training, information, support and technical advice to staff, parents and students in the area of DHH
  • Implement, develop or revise instructional materials which correspond each student's IEP
  • Provide direct individual or small group instruction and services to students
  • Monitor student progress as it relates to established IEPs
  • Maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with students, teachers, staff, parents and other agencies
  • Maintain accurate reports, records and files on individual students
  • Assist in identifying, developing and implementing appropriate use of resources for instructional application
  • Assess language, English and ASL, listening skills, written language and speech reading
  • Select and order appropriate assessment tools, instructional materials and adaptive equipment
  • Provide opportunities for students to access local, state and national resources
  • Analyze and interpret audiological and other reports
  • Perform diagnostics and minor repairs of amplification devices and adaptive equipment at school sites
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Maintain service logs and participate in the LEA Medi Cal and MAA reimbursement programs as appropriate
Experience and Education

Any combination of education training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described above.

Valid California Teaching credential with deaf and hard of hearing authorization or ability to obtain one.

Valid California driver's license and evidence of insurance.

Knowledge Of
  • The use of amplification equipment (hearing aids, FM/sound field systems, cochlear implants, etc.).
  • Auditory training and speech reading practices.
  • Instruction in oral and written vocabulary and connected language.
  • Interagency relationships and effective methods of program coordination.
  • Learning theory based upon the principles of behavior analysis and behavior modification, with an emphasis on positive reinforcement.
  • Laws, codes and regulations as they relate to special education.
  • Practical application of principles, practices, methods and strategies applicable to DHH students.
  • Providing support across educational environments and systems of service to DHH students.
  • Assessment of students for initial placement and ongoing assessment of students on the caseload.
Ability To
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Communicate in Sign Language
  • Work with a diversity of individuals.
  • Utilize job related equipment
  • Interact with parents, district and county personnel and public agencies.
  • Maintain accurate student reports and current records.
  • Provide individualized instruction to students.
  • Monitor student progress; prepare various forms of correspondence, including parent notifications and administrative requests.
Physical Abilities
  • Sufficient vision to read material with or without vision aides
  • Sufficient hearing to conduct in-person conversations with students, teachers and parents
  • Sufficient voice volume to be heard at normal conversational distances
  • Ability to stand, sit or walk for extended periods of time
  • Physical, mental and emotional stamina to endure stressful conditions
  • Use hands to touch, handle, reach, feel objects, controls, or tools
  • Ability to demonstrate gross and fine motor skills and movements to students
  • Occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds
