San Mateo County Public Safety Communications is in search of LEADERS!

The Office of Public Safety Communications (PSC) is accepting applications for the position of Supervising Communications Dispatcher
.

Supervising Communications Dispatchers lead and coordinate operations of a shift or an assigned function, and must be familiar with all disciplines of the Center operations. Supervisors exercise discretion and sound judgment in day-to-day shift operations and provide administrative, technical, and policy guidance, as well as feedback and performance evaluations to subordinate Communications Dispatchers.

About the Department

San Mateo County’s only Tri-Community (Police, Fire, Medical) Communications Center is hiring. The dispatch facility is located in Redwood City and provides the tools for successful dispatch operations. The Regional Operations Center features state-of-the-art consoles and a brand-new Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. PSC emphasizes employee wellbeing with initiatives such as therapy animals, an on-site gym, a Quiet Room, and a full kitchen.

Position Details

Supervising Communications Dispatchers, under the direction of the Operations Manager, are responsible for full operational responsibility of the tri-community Public Safety Communications Center on an assigned shift. They provide administrative, technical, and policy guidance as well as direct supervision of subordinate Communications Dispatchers.

  • Possession of a California POST Basic Certificate for Public Safety Dispatchers, or ability to obtain one within the probationary period.
  • Experienced dispatcher with knowledge and hands-on use of Computer Aided Dispatch systems.
  • Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission regulations regarding radio and/or telephone operation.
  • Ability to communicate using radio and telephone.
Requirements and Responsibilities

The successful incumbent must be willing to work day, swing, graveyard, rotating, holiday, weekend, overtime, and mandatory shifts. They will also:

  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical examination.
  • Follow strict Drug Use standards and guidelines.
  • Possess good moral character as determined by a background investigation mandated by the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Duties
  • Plan, direct, assign, supervise, monitor, train, and evaluate shift activities in the Communications Center or other assigned function.
  • Provide leadership and direct supervision to assigned Communications Dispatchers or other personnel.
  • Attend and/or facilitate meetings related to Communications Center operations.
  • Investigate internal and external inquiries; prepare detailed reports and policies.
  • Coordinate with supervisory staff and develop strategies for community needs; implement solutions as necessary.
  • Assess shift operations and workload, adjusting as needed; coordinate large-scale incidents.
  • Update shift schedules and complete administrative tasks related to shift operations.
  • Receive, review, and process incident reports and calls for public safety agencies.
  • Screen and prioritize telephone workload; monitor system status.
  • Provide leadership and support in day-to-day operations and large-scale incidents; coordinate mutual aid dispatching.
  • Develop positive working relationships with customers, the public, and partner agencies; testify in court as needed.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of highways, streets, buildings, and points of interest in the County and surrounding areas.
