Overview
HVAC Product Engineers are responsible for designing, developing, and supporting highly customized HVAC equipment from concept through manufacturing and field support. In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with sales, design, manufacturing, testing, and project teams to translate customer requirements into efficient, high-quality engineered solutions. You’ll apply strong fundamentals in thermodynamics, heat transfer, refrigeration, and mechanical design while leveraging 3D modeling and analysis tools to innovate and continuously improve products.
This position offers the opportunity to work hands‑on with real equipment, influence product direction, and see your designs built, tested, and delivered to customers.
- Design products and coordinate the manufacturing process of those products.
- Work with the engineering team to design innovative new products.
- Work closely with the sales and design teams to create industry‑relevant products that meet project and company specifications.
- Transform ideas into high‑end products that perfectly meet the needs of our customers.
- Create complete product designs using component selection software and 3D modeling tools.
- Use industry knowledge to develop unique product ideas.
- Update existing designs for cost reduction, innovative upgrades, efficiency, etc.
- Create models, prototypes, drawings, BOMS, etc.
- Test and validate new designs and updates.
- Keep current on product and component technology improvements and industry trends to effectively perform functions of the position.
- Work with manufacturing to optimize design for production.
- Troubleshoot customer issues.
- Assist factory personnel with testing and assembly.
- Assist the Marketing and Sales Departments with technical training and materials.
- Assist development of, and work within, project budget and timelines.
- Propose new ideas and initiate cost reduction and product improvement effort to increase overall product value.
- Maintain product documentation to assure engineering documentation, drafting documentation, and products are consistent.
- Give advice, analyze information, and provide technical guidance within a specific function for others within the organization.
- Consult, design, test and innovate HVAC solutions for clients of every size; as well as lead projects and provide design expertise.
- Develop and execute Product Development testing plans in support of engineering objectives. Guide testing technicians during testing.
- Analyze HVAC systems and equipment when necessary to find inefficiencies or malfunctions and create solutions to optimize performance and increase the efficiency of operation.
- Heat Transfer - Demonstrated knowledge of condensing, evaporating and single‑phase heat transfer. Understands application of heat transfer theory to HVAC heat exchangers.
- Thermodynamics - Demonstrated knowledge of application of thermodynamics to HVAC equipment; understands the thermodynamics of refrigerants and glycol solutions used in chiller systems.
- Electrical - Understands fundamental electromechanical devices such as motors and actuators; power electronic devices such as VFDs, starters, switchgears; and control system devices such as PLCs, and temperature, pressure, and flow sensors.
- Simulation & Modeling - Understands fundamental principles of single phase CFD, finite element analysis, vapor compression cycle calculations. Can guide coworkers in the analysis of detailed case studies, problems, and simulations.
- Test Data Analysis - Ability to provide accurate and sound conclusions from large arrays of test data.
- Sound and Vibration - Understand fundamentals of noise and vibration applied to HVAC equipment.
- Design - Generates creative solutions. Develop designs from concept to completion. Demonstrates attention to detail.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field
- 3+ years of HVAC related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- In depth knowledge of principles and practices of engineering, preferably in the HVAC and manufacturing industries
- 1+ year experience with 3D modeling software such as Autodesk Inventor (preferred) or Solidworks
