Definition Of ClassificationReporting to the Head Athletic Trainer, the Assistant Athletic Trainer ensures the health and safety of 21 NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic program participants and assists the Head Athletic Trainer in the management of a medical clinic. This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required.
Duties And Responsibilities- Prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses, providing medical advice based on evidence-based, best practices.
- Provides health care services to student-athletes for home practices and contests.
- Provides appropriate emergency care and first aid to all student-athletes.
- Develops patient-specific preventative and rehabilitative programming.
- Ensures updated medical records and documentation.
- Assists student-athletes in completing medical eligibility requirements, including procuring health screenings and appropriate information relevant to their health and safety.
- Assists students navigating the health insurance and health care system.
- Collaborates effectively with coaches and department support staff to provide whole-person care with a priority on student-athlete health and safety.
- Collaborates effectively with team physician and other allied health professionals to deliver quality care to student-athletes.
- Refers student-athletes to other health care professionals when necessary to ensure successful continuation of care.
- Hires, trains, supervises, and coordinates work-study student employees.
- Reviews and updates athletic training department policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Educates coaches, student-athletes, and athletic department support staff on relevant policy updates.
- Educates athletic department staff on CPR and First Aid certification updates.
- Maintains annual education schedule for coaches.
- Demonstrates positive and effective communication in all aspects of position, including writing, speaking, listening, and non-verbal skills.
- Exhibiting the highest professional standards and ethical behavior regarding adherence to NCAA, Conference, Institutional, and Department of Athletics policies and expectations
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge on medical best practices for the athletic population.
- Enforce safety procedures.
- Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.
Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:
Experience/Training/Education- Bachelor’s degree required in Physical Education, Sports Medicine, or a related field.
- One year experience in a patient-facing role.
- Must have a current/valid BOC certification.
- Must have a current CPR/AED certification.
- A valid California Class C CA drivers’ license with a good driving record is required.
Note:
Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment. A valid California Class “C” driver’s license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).
- Master’s degree.

- Work experience with a variety of sports.
- Knowledge of athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as of first-aid, athletic equipment, and injury assessment and treatment.
- Communicate effectively and follow instructions, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
