SEN Classroom Assistant – RH6, Surrey

Location: South East England, West Sussex, Haywards Heath

Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Educational Needs (SEN) Classroom Assistant to join an educational setting based in RH6 area. The successful candidate works alongside teaching staff to support pupils with additional needs, facilitating their learning and social development within the classroom environment. This role requires strong communication skills, patience, and a proactive approach to meeting the diverse needs of children and young people.

Job Duties
  • Support pupils with special educational needs in accessing the curriculum and participating fully in classroom activities.
  • Work under the guidance of the class teacher and SEN coordinator to implement individual education plans and tailored learning programmes.
  • Assist with the preparation of teaching materials and resources to support learning objectives.
  • Provide one-to-one or small group support as required to enhance pupils’ understanding and engagement.
  • Promote positive behaviour and encourage social interaction between pupils in a respectful and inclusive manner.
  • Observe and record pupils’ progress and report concerns or achievements to teaching staff.
  • Support pupils with personal care needs where necessary, ensuring dignity and respect at all times.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive learning environment, adhering to safeguarding policies and health and safety regulations.
  • Attend training sessions and team meetings as required to develop professional knowledge and skills.
  • Support transitions for pupils within the school and to external settings as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
  • Qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Certificate or Diploma) is desirable but not essential.
Education
  • Completion of relevant secondary education.
  • Ongoing commitment to professional development in special educational needs and inclusive education.
Experience
  • Previous experience working with children or young people with special educational needs in an educational or care setting.
  • Experience supporting learning activities and behaviour management within a classroom environment.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Good understanding of the challenges faced by pupils with special educational needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, staff and parents/carers.
  • Patience, empathy and a positive attitude towards supporting pupils’ development.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills to assist with educational tasks.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Awareness of safeguarding procedures and child protection legislation.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the changing needs of pupils and school requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Level 3 Diploma for Teaching Assistants or equivalent qualification.
  • Specific training in autism, speech and language difficulties, or other relevant SEN areas.
  • First aid certification or willingness to obtain.
Working Conditions
  • The role is based within a school environment, primarily classroom-based but may involve outdoor activities.
  • Full-time hours, typically aligned with the school term and day schedule.
  • May require physical activity such as assisting pupils with mobility or personal care.
  • Exposure to a busy and varied educational setting with demands for flexibility and responsiveness.
  • Compliance with all relevant health and safety and safeguarding policies is mandatory.
