Job Summary

Under the immediate supervision of the site administrator or indirect supervision of the Supervisor of Maintenance/Operations or Designee, the custodian maintains the building and other assigned areas of a school facility in a clean, orderly, and secure manner following a predetermined schedule and performs other related works as required.

Essential Functions
  • Empties and cleans waste receptacles, including trash barrels.
  • Cleans restrooms, locker rooms, and showers.
  • Washes windows and walls, polishes metalwork and cleans chalkboards.
  • Moves and arranges furniture and equipment in preparing multipurpose rooms or classrooms for special events or meetings.
  • Cleans window coverings such as drapes and blinds.
  • Picks up paper and other debris from school grounds, walk areas, and the areas adjacent to the school facilities.
  • Performs emergency clean‑up service resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling, and illness.
  • Raises and lowers flag, locks and unlocks gates and doors, and sets security systems.
  • Assists in receiving and distributing supplies and equipment.
  • May perform minor maintenance tasks to keep assigned areas safe and operational.
  • Assists in reporting and preventing facility vandalism.
  • Performs all general custodial duties as requested by the site administrator.
  • Properly operates the heating/cooling system.
  • Keeps assigned rooms, buildings, or office space clean, safe, and orderly.
  • Sweeps, scrubs, mops, cleans, and waxes floors.
  • Vacuumes rugs and carpets.
  • Cleans and dusts walls, lockers, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Sweeps walkways and asphalt areas.
  • May perform routine groundskeeping duties.
  • Assists in restoration of buildings and grounds during school recess or vacation.
  • Moves supplies, furniture, and equipment.
  • Performs minor painting and other building maintenance duties.
  • Reports or corrects dangerous or unsightly conditions on the premises.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe working methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance principles.
  • Ability to perform moderately medium to heavy manual activities.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively use cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of personalities.
  • Ability to make minor building and equipment repairs.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and carry out details of a work schedule efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain accurate inventory of supplies.
  • Ability to requisition materials as needed.
Physical Demands
  • Exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and occasionally lift up to 90 lbs.
  • May involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps; and walking or standing for extended periods.
  • Perceive sound, near and far vision, depth perception, provide oral information, exercise manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle work with various materials and objects.
  • May be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather.
  • Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Experience and Education

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills in qualifying. Typical ways to obtain the required knowledge and skills include:

  • Experience in the care and cleaning of buildings and facilities.
  • Experience in carpentry, groundskeeping, electrical, and plumbing.
  • Experience in the use of hazardous materials.
  • Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Immediate Supervision:
Supervisor on site. Indirect Supervision:
Supervisor in District, but not on site (Rev. 12/97).
