Overview
This is the entry-level class for SQL Server database administration classification. Incumbents are expected to develop a variety of database skills and abilities and are gradually given more responsible assignments required for promotion to the next higher class of IT Database Administrator II. The IT Database Administrator I is capable of learning the skills necessary to be proficient in all aspects of SQL Server database management and administration and will have strong interpersonal and communication skills;
is capable of explaining procedures in writing or verbally; and possesses good phone skills.
- Learn and perform a variety of tasks related to SQL Server database administration; research and respond to staff and management technical inquiries concerning SQL Server database management system (DBMS) environments.
- Participate in the evaluation of available database hardware and software and facilitates adoption discussions; provide input on hardware, software, and other costs; participate in DBMS upgrades.
- Develop, implement and maintain database backup and recovery procedures to ensure data integrity, security, and recoverability of data; prepare and implement business continuity and disaster recovery planning as it relates to SQL Server databases.
- Develop, acquire, install, and maintain database performance measuring and reporting systems; analyze performance data to determine need for modification or addition to system configuration to meet current and future needs.
- Confer and consult with management and other technical staff and vendors as required; create and maintain database documentation; participate in database security and security strategies; consider security at each phase of planning and design.
- Participate in capacity planning to ensure that the database infrastructure is designed for current needs and future expansion; represent database support at meetings; work closely with development team to assist with design and implementation of SQL Server databases for complex business applications; assist with interface implementation to other systems.
- Confer with IT management to ensure that proposed solutions are appropriate; perform other related projects and tasks as required/assigned.
- Primary support of databases for specified vendor applications; to include administration, implementation, maintenance and ongoing support of production SQL Server database environments.
- Work with leads in other functional areas to troubleshoot system problems when SQL Server databases are involved; install, patch, upgrade and test custom and vendor SQL Server software and databases.
- Ad-hoc reporting and incident tracking; develop and debug SQL queries, stored procedures, and triggers; work with vendors and or developers to tune existing queries and configuration to improve performance or resolve performance issues.
- Work closely with development team to assist with design and implementation of SQL Server databases for complex business applications; review proposed changes to databases to advise on performance impacts.
- Provide support and suggestions for improving departmental processes; assist in the research and evaluation of support tools and methodologies.
Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following:
- Knowledge
:
Relational databases, database design, and normalization; relational DBMS architecture;
Microsoft SQL Server product family; security, system and object level privileges, roles and an understanding of how OS security options relate to the database environment;
Windows operating systems and networking; SQL Server administration and configuration; database performance management and monitoring tools and methods; SQL Profiler, Execution Plans;
Transact-SQL;
Data Transformation Services (DTS) and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS); reporting tools; SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), Crystal Reports. - Ability

Perform database problem resolution and cause analysis as well as recommend and implement preventative techniques; design, develop and maintain database and data transformation packages; create and update technical documentation; understand, translate and coordinate requirements into efficient usage of software and hardware products; demonstrate good time management skills by organizing work and desk space, managing priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments with a minimal of direction;
