Description of Basic Functions and Responsibilities

The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Community College District is a collaborative and inclusive organization that strives for equity and equal opportunity and that serves a diverse student population. Under administrative leadership, it is the responsibility of the part‑time college instructor to teach classes, and to participate in processes that will result in continuous improvement of instruction and programs, student success and completion, and advancement of the vision, mission, and values of Shasta College.

All Temporary Part‑time Instructors are compensated a salaried flat rate ranging from $59.19 to $84.20 per clock hour taught each semester in accordance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District and Shasta College Faculty Association/CTA/NEA.

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability

Successful Applicants will be able to demonstrate that they are broadly prepared and have a depth of knowledge in the discipline. In addition, they must be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and abilities:

  • Work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population.
  • Work effectively with students with a wide range of skills, motivations, academic, and vocational goals.
  • Design and deliver courses, including those offered in different modalities (e.g., in‑person, online, hybrid).
  • Participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain subject‑matter currency.
  • Assess student learning outcomes.
  • Explore new technologies and teaching practices that would benefit students and programs.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities.
  • Commit to the California community college mission.
Specific Responsibilities Classroom Responsibilities
  • Meet classes/laboratories as assigned within the academic calendar and/or during intersessions and summer sessions.
  • Develop and implement instruction for each class and laboratory period, consistent with the official course outline and District guidelines.
  • For online and hybrid courses, maintain online course components, including asynchronous or synchronous content delivery, as required by the teaching assignment.
  • Provide regular student‑student and student‑instructor contact for online and hybrid courses.
  • During the first week of class, develop and distribute a syllabus for each course to communicate to students the course description, objectives, grading, testing, attendance, and other requirements, in accordance with District guidelines on syllabus content.
  • Provide regular, timely feedback to students; return all graded work in a timely fashion.
  • Assign final grades for courses as required by District policy, administrative procedures, California Education Code, and Title 5.
  • Demonstrate respect for student rights as specified in District policy and applicable laws.
  • Submit requisitions for textbooks and instructional materials in a timely manner and with consideration of cost to the student.
  • Refer students to tutoring and related student services when appropriate.
  • Supervise students in off‑campus activities when participation is expected as part of a course requirement or where such supervision is part of the instructor’s load.
  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours.
  • Participate in professional development to remain current in the assigned discipline.
  • Submit required administrative paperwork, including student learning outcomes, in a timely and accurate manner.
