Lead all aspects of Sheldon Theatre performance and event production processes including coordinating with other departments to ensure efficiency and excellence of the production process, hiring and supervising necessary staff and crews, maintaining theatrical systems and coordinating with artists and other space users to ensure that all events are delivered professionally, efficiently, and consistent with the values and quality expected of the Sheldon Theatre.

Job Functions

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:

  • Establish and implement backstage policies, advance planning, preparatory work for lighting, sound and stage rigging, loading in, setting up, and loading out shows.
  • Provide supervision of production and front of house staff and volunteers; participate in the selection and promotion of staff, manage staff performance, reviews, approve time‑off requests, and review employee timesheets.
  • Execute and supervise the professional delivery of lighting, sound and stage craft as needed in support of touring and local productions. Oversee scheduling, assigning work, and ensuring project completion; evaluate workload and determine priorities.
  • Oversee production preparation.
  • Provide leadership, offer consulting in design, construction and professional processes for local users.
  • Execute the operational role as an expert in the fields of lighting, sound design, and stagecraft. Stay up to date in industry.
  • Develop and implement backstage policies and procedures emphasizing safety procedures.
  • Maintain highest quality facilities and theatrical systems. Recommend improvements, repair, and maintenance of all stage equipment and supplies.
  • Propose annual purchasing needs; work closely with the Executive & Artistic Director to manage the artist and rental contracting process, ensuring that all agreements are clear and in writing.
  • Cultivate and manage theatre rental activity, including maximizing appropriate supplemental use of spaces throughout the year.
  • Monitor and project the annual production operating budget including capital improvement requests as well as creating and updating the long‑term capital purchase list.
  • Coordinate with artists and other space users to ensure delivery of professional presented events.
  • Cultivate and manage theatre rental activity and maintain theatre calendar.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure efficiency and excellence of the production process.
  • Ability to work with youth and adult theatre production.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge
  • Lighting and sound systems, sound engineering, stage rigging, fly systems, and theater industry software.
  • Broad understanding in all aspects of technical theater.
  • Theater policies affecting conditions under which performances are conducted.
  • Theatres and arenas including layout, facility capabilities and limitations.
  • Basic principles of organization, public relations and administration.
  • Basic principles and practices of personnel management as related to contract, part‑time staff and volunteer organization, recruitment, selection, training, supervision and motivation.
  • Materials, staffing, supplies, and equipment needed for performance events.
  • Sheldon Theatre policies for both front and back of house including emergency readiness and evacuation procedures.
  • Thorough understanding of City’s functions, policies, and procedures.
  • In‑depth knowledge of lighting plot creation and implementation.
Skills
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to read a script, technical riders, and performance contracts and assess requirements for staffing, budgets and/or design.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills.
  • Follow and relay complex oral and written instructions, policies and procedures.
Abilities
  • Willingness to listen to comments and complaints of staff, volunteers, and community.
  • Resolve problems with diplomacy.

Physical
  • Work is light with frequent standing, stair climbing and walking.
  • Intermittent lifting up to 60 pounds.
  • Climbing and walking on catwalks 30 feet in the air.
  • Hours worked may include evenings and weekends.
