About the PositionUnder the direction of a division Captain, supervises, directs and evaluates personnel and activities within assigned unit and/or assists the Captain in supervising the division. Prepares and maintains required records and reports. Supervises and performs patrol and/or jail duties to ensure the strict enforcement of applicable laws and regulations. Supervises Sheriff’s Office personnel assigned to the Court in the transportation of inmates and courtroom security.
- Schedules, supervises, directs, and evaluates activities of officers within assigned area of responsibility. Supervises subordinate officers and personnel through the chain of command; monitors and evaluates performance of department personnel to ensure proper and effective attainment of department goals.
- Assists in conducting effective training of division personnel.
- Ensures the provision of adequate and properly working equipment for subordinate personnel.
- Coordinates division activities, special events and emergency services with Sheriff’s Department personnel and other agencies, departments and community groups.
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Equivalent to the completion of twelfth (12th) grade and graduation from an accredited college with an Associate’s degree or an equivalent combination of extensive college course work in police science, administration of justice, or a related field.
Seven (7) years of experience as a law enforcement officer, to include at least two (2) years of supervisory experience at the level of Sergeant is desirable.
Other combinations of experience and education may be considered.
Special Requirements
- Must possess current Peace Officers’ Standards and Training (POST) Advanced Certificate. A Supervisory Certificate is desirable.
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license.
- Possession of a valid first aid/CPR certificate from a certified trainer/provider is desirable.
- Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation prior to employment.
The department is recruiting for one (1) anticipated vacancy as of 1/25/2026. In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for a Lieutenant, as well as subsequent vacancies, which occur during the life of the eligibility list. New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than the A step.
