Tehama County Department of Child Support Services is one of 47 local child support agencies in California. The department manages approximately 2,700 child support cases. Providing customers excellent service is a top priority. Staff are trained professionals ready to assist customers in opening a case, establishing a child support order, determining paternity, modifying their order, and enforcing their order.

Ideal CandidateTehama Department of Child Support Services is looking for a positive, professional team member with exceptional attendance, communication skills and eagerness to step into the role of a leader. Candidates should be a subject matter expert in case management with a record of excellent performance, conduct and professionalism.
About the PositionUnder limited supervision, the Child Support Specialist IV performs a wide variety of child support duties involving the most difficult and sensitive cases; acts in a lead capacity by training, reviewing, assigning, and directing the work of subordinate staff; acts in the supervisor’s absence, assists with low-level administrative functions, and performs related work as required.
- Analyzes and evaluates the more complex and sensitive Child Support cases.
- Coordinates and conducts interviews with multiple parties (e.g., custodial parent, non-custodial parent, witnesses, employers, attorneys) to obtain and/or verify child support case information.
- Develops and analyzes information for the establishment of paternity (e.g., genetic tests).
- Locates absent parents using a variety of methods and tools (e.g., contacting other agencies, databases, web searches).
- Reviews parental financial income and expense data (e.g., child support payments, expenses, income, ability to pay) to determine support requirements; explains the process by which support is determined to custodial and non-custodial parents.
- Equivalent to completion of twelfth (12th) grade.
- One (1) year of full-time experience performing duties comparable to a Child Support Specialist III or Child Support Specialist IV in a state or local government agency.
- OR
- Three (3) years of full-time experience performing duties comparable to a Child Support Specialist II in a state or local government agency.
Special Requirements
- Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California Class C driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record is required. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
- All employees will be subject to a background check at the time of hiring and at least every five years.
Training & Experience (T&E) Examination - Weighted 100%. Candidates must achieve at least 70% to be placed on the eligibility list.
Tentative T&E Examination DatesExams will be emailed to candidates meeting minimum qualifications the week of December 8, 2025. Candidates have three days to return the completed examination.
InterviewsInterviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of December 17, 2025. Only the most qualified candidates will be invited to interview.
Application InstructionsNew employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement above A step.
