We are now seeking Correctional Officers for the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins, Wyoming.

The Wyoming State Penitentiary (WSP) is a high‑custody facility for the general population and administrative segregation housing. This position is essential for maintaining the institution's safety and security and is considered a Law Enforcement position, receiving a 20‑year retirement and state benefits package. This is an entry‑level position, and career/growth opportunities are available.

Essential Functions

To maintain institutional safety standards, the position requires the following:

  • Enforcement of rules and regulations.
  • Responding to post orders of varied assigned posts.
  • Supervising inmates in the performance of various jobs; modeling appropriate, pro‑social behavior.
  • Assisting in a variety of searches, including checking for contraband items.
  • Observing daily inmate living, programming, work areas, and the perimeter fence line, reporting security violations.
  • Conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates.
  • Assuming duties of housing control centers, central control centers, and inmate living areas, monitoring inmate movements.
  • Becoming familiar with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of inmate movements and infractions.
  • Assisting in restraining unruly inmates, utilizing the minimum amount of force required.
  • Assisting in transporting inmates within and off institution boundaries, including inter‑ and intra‑state predetermined destinations.
  • Assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the appropriate out processing of released inmates.
  • Attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level.
Preferences / Agency Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must not have a felony or domestic violence conviction.
  • All successful candidates will be required to complete an initial training period and be awarded Correctional Officer Certification by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission within one year of initial appointment.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of security measures, techniques, and precautions necessary to maintain a safe and secure institution.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: 0‑1 year of progressive work experience in a Correctional Setting

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None

Physical Working Conditions
  • Candidates must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen, and other pre‑employment testing before the appointment.
  • Candidates must have the ability to work overtime as required and the ability to work on any shift, holidays, and weekends.
