Job Summary And Responsibilities
  • Lead contextual research to discover unmet user needs, create usability specifications and requirements, and iteratively test with stakeholders through a robust formative and summative usability process.
  • Support human factors efforts for programs from concept through post‑market release, influencing usability activities for product lines with oversight from senior IDHF/UX team members.
  • Support user research and insights discovery through design thinking, planning, coordination, observation, data collection, analysis, documentation, and collaboration with cross‑functional teammates.
  • Interact closely with multiple product development teams across multiple platforms to complete necessary usability research and documentation, partnering with business leaders and stakeholders for success.
  • Develop a good understanding of intended use environments through field experience and user interactions.
  • Work on usability problems of diverse scope that impact broader program team and business milestones through partnership and collaboration with senior team members.
  • Collaborate with third‑party contractors/consultants to execute usability research activities.
  • Leverage human factors standards and best practices to inform new product designs and ensure concepts support safe, effective, and satisfying use.
  • Plan, field, and report various user research activities, including ethnography, focus groups, formative usability tests, and HF validation tests.
  • Consolidate user feedback into meaningful design insights and actionable recommendations.
  • Perform thoughtful and thorough root cause analysis for use‑related problems that arise during hands‑on usability tests.
  • Develop an understanding of use environments and participate in the creation of user workflows.
  • Understand the regulatory imperative for medical device human factors, including IEC 62366 and FDA's final HF guidance.
  • Contribute to human factors documentation, including test plans and reports, expert reviews, use‑related risk analyses, use specifications, known problems analyses, and HF engineering reports.
  • Author study documentation such as informed consent forms, participant recruitment screeners, moderator guides, and use error checklists.
Education
  • BS/BA Degree in Human Factors Engineering (HFE), Usability Engineering, Cognitive Science, Anthropology, or equivalent; post‑graduate degrees are a plus.
Preferred Experience and Skills
  • Minimum of 2 years' human factors/usability engineering experience or equivalent in product development and customer interactions.
  • Experience planning and executing all aspects of the HFE process, including ethnographic research, formative and summative studies, documentation for design control and risk management, and moderating studies.
  • Familiarity with FDA, ISO, AAMI, and other relevant usability regulations and standards.
  • Strong knowledge of human factors principles and task/use‑related risk analysis methods.
  • Knowledge of user interface and experience principles for hardware and software, workload, perception, and cognition.
  • Basic knowledge of anthropometrics, biomechanics, and physiology.
  • Experience consolidating user feedback into concise, meaningful design insights and actionable recommendations.
  • Ability to negotiate with stakeholders and provide disposition feedback or suggestions.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis for use‑related problems.
  • Experience partnering with R&D, Marketing, and Development teams to define and uphold usability best practices.
  • Medical device product development or experience is a strong plus.
