Position: ACCESS CONTROL TECHNICIAN

Access Control Technician

Full-Time | Monday–Friday | 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Reporting to the Information Technology Director, this role supports field installations, system administration, troubleshooting, vendor coordination, and specialized applications used across City departments.

  • Maintain and support the City’s access control systems, employee identification card system, and physical security hardware.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for access control and security system issues.
  • Install, configure, and test access control devices, cameras, controllers, locksets, low-voltage components, and supporting network equipment.
  • Administer and support Verkada access control and Ubiquiti camera platforms, including user management, system configuration, and monitoring.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, and network connectivity issues related to physical security systems.
  • Coordinate installation projects, including scheduling, materials planning, documentation, and communication with departments, contractors, and vendors.
  • Provide training to employees on the use and features of access control and security systems.
  • Assist with specialized software applications used by City departments, including configuration, basic troubleshooting, and user support.
  • Perform field work to verify equipment, collect data, and support installations.
  • Prepare documentation, diagrams, and reports related to system configuration, maintenance, and project activities.
  • Stay current on industry trends, technologies, and best practices through training and workshops.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required; college coursework preferred.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in access control, CCTV, low-voltage systems, or related technical work.
  • Experience installing and configuring IP-based security hardware (cameras, readers, locksets, controllers, etc.).
  • Valid Florida driver’s license required.
  • Working knowledge of access control systems, preferably including cloud-managed platforms such as Verkada.
  • Experience with IP networking concepts including VLANs, switching, routing, and wireless connectivity.
  • Familiarity with Ubiquiti camera systems or similar IP-based CCTV platforms.
  • Ability to troubleshoot low-voltage power, cabling, and network connectivity issues.
  • Experience with Ethernet and fiber optic cabling standards and installation practices.
  • Basic understanding of server, storage, and network architectures.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to train users and prepare clear documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and procedures.
Physical Requirements:
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, and hear; frequently required to use hands to handle or operate equipment.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, or crawl.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
  • Work may involve heights using ladders or aerial lifts.
  • Vision requirements include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
  • Work is typically performed in a quiet office environment with regular fieldwork at City facilities.
