Job DescriptionRESPEC is seeking a Student Structural BIM Intern to join our 2026 Summer Internship Program in our Rapid City office. This position offers an excellent opportunity for students interested in structural drafting, BIM modeling, and design support to gain real-world experience within a growing North American engineering consulting firm.
This hands‑on internship is within RESPEC’s Facilities (Structural) Market Sector and focuses on Building Information Modeling (BIM) and structural drafting support. The intern will work closely with structural engineers and designers to assist with the development and coordination of structural models and construction documents.
Under the guidance of experienced staff, the intern will receive mentoring and exposure to professional consulting services, interdisciplinary collaboration, and real project workflows.
Responsibilities- Assist in developing and maintaining structural BIM models using software such as Revit under the guidance of senior staff.
- Support the preparation of structural drawings, details, and model-based documentation for various project phases.
- Coordinate with structural engineers and BIM technicians to incorporate design changes and redlines into models.
- Perform basic model checks to help identify clashes, inconsistencies, or missing information.
- Organize and manage BIM files in accordance with company standards and project requirements.
- Extract quantities, schedules, and basic model data as needed to support engineering tasks.
- Participate in coordination meetings and gain exposure to multidisciplinary workflows (structural, architectural, MEP).
- Follow established BIM standards, templates, and best practices while learning industry workflows.
- Currently pursuing an associate’s degree in drafting, architectural/structural engineering technology, or a related field.
- Interest in structural design and BIM workflows.
- Coursework or experience related to structural drafting or BIM.
- Proficiency or working knowledge of Autodesk Revit;
AutoCAD experience a plus. - Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and willingness to learn.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Compensation: Compensation depends on experience. No benefits are offered except those that are required for statutory purposes.
