The Hand and Upper Extremity Orthopedic Surgeon provides comprehensive surgical and non-surgical care for patients with conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. This role includes evaluation, diagnosis, operative management, and rehabilitation planning for traumatic, degenerative, congenital, and overuse conditions, delivered through evidence-based, patient-centered orthopedic care.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesEvaluate and manage conditions of the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, and shoulder, including trauma, arthritis, nerve compression, tendon disorders, and congenital abnormalities
Perform surgical procedures consistent with fellowship training and privileges, including hand and upper extremity reconstruction, fracture fixation, nerve and tendon repair, and elective procedures
Provide non-operative management such as injections, splinting, casting, therapy referrals, and rehabilitation planning
Manage perioperative and postoperative care, including complication management and functional recovery
Participate in orthopedic trauma and emergency call coverage as required
Interpret diagnostic studies including X-rays, CT scans, MRI, and electrodiagnostic testing
Collaborate with physical and occupational therapy, primary care, rheumatology, neurology, plastic surgery, and rehabilitation services
Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, surgical risks, and expected outcomes
Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and outcomes initiatives
Supervise and educate residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, or clinical staff as applicable
Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
Completion of an accredited orthopedic surgery residency program
Completion of an accredited hand and upper extremity or hand surgery fellowship
Board-eligible or board-certified in Orthopedic Surgery
Eligibility for subspecialty certification in Hand Surgery preferred
Ability to obtain and maintain unrestricted state medical licensure
DEA registration or eligibility
Advanced expertise in hand and upper extremity surgical techniques
Strong clinical judgment and operative decision-making skills
Ability to manage complex musculoskeletal and neurovascular conditions
Excellent communication and patient counseling abilities
Commitment to evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient safety
Hospital operating rooms, outpatient orthopedic clinics, ambulatory surgery centers, and inpatient units
Call coverage including nights, weekends, and holidays as required
Ability to stand for extended periods during surgical procedures
Manual dexterity and physical stamina for fine motor surgical work
Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for operative and clinical environments
