The Metals Manufacturing Engineer plays a key role in advancing Applied Medical’s mission to deliver high-quality, innovative medical devices that improve patient outcomes. Based at Applied Medical’s global headquarters in Southern California, the Metals Manufacturing Engineer supports the Metals Process Development (MPD) team by developing, sustaining, and improving manufacturing processes for precision metal components used across a range of surgical products.
This position is highly hands‑on and collaborative, requiring strong technical aptitude, manufacturing process knowledge, and the ability to work closely with production teams, engineering, and suppliers. The Metals Manufacturing Engineer applies engineering principles to optimize machining and post‑processing operations, ensuring manufacturability, quality, and efficiency in a fast‑paced medical device manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and sustain manufacturing processes for metal components used in medical devices, including Swiss screw machining, laser cutting, stamping, wire electrical discharge machining, and CNC milling
- Investigate and implement new tooling, materials, and manufacturing technologies to improve quality, precision, and throughput
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including design engineering, quality, and production to ensure manufacturability and process reliability
- Support shop order delivery by debugging, observing, and expediting parts through the manufacturing process
- Create and update technical documentation such as Manufacturing Instructions (MI), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and Test Methods (TM)
- Perform technical writing tasks including Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ) protocols
- Support non‑conformance investigations by inspecting components, reviewing documentation, and coordinating corrective actions with production and quality teams
- Provide on‑the‑floor training and guidance to operators and production team leads to ensure compliance with process standards and continuous improvement initiatives
- Developing robust and repeatable manufacturing processes that consistently meet performance and quality standards
- Effectively collaborating with production and engineering teams to resolve technical issues and improve operational efficiency
- Demonstrating strong problem‑solving and analytical skills by investigating root causes and implementing effective corrective actions
- Maintaining accurate, complete, and timely documentation that supports manufacturing and regulatory requirements
- Contributing to cross‑functional initiatives that drive innovation and improve Applied Medical’s metals manufacturing capabilities
- Building strong relationships with production operators, engineers, and suppliers to foster trust, transparency, and teamwork
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering, or a related field
- Two to five years of relevant engineering experience in manufacturing or metals processing
- Hands‑on experience with manufacturing equipment such as Swiss screw machines, laser cutting systems, stamping and punching machines, CNC mills, and wire electrical discharge machining
- Strong technical writing skills and experience preparing or reviewing documentation such as SOPs, MIs, IQ/OQ/PQ protocols, or NCIRs (Non‑Conformance Investigation Reports)
- Working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC), Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and design for manufacturability principles
