Environmental Compliance, Safety Engineer
Overview
We’re seeking a highly motivated person to work in key programs that support safe and efficient transportation systems. In this role, you’ll oversee traffic signal studies, analyze statistical data, work with the computerized traffic signal system software, coordinate travel time studies, gather data and generate reports, and work with new traffic technologies. You will play a role in day-to-day operations, ensuring compliance with local and federal regulations, and upholding high standards of quality and safety.
As a team member, you’ll foster a positive team culture, support staff daily in decisions regarding operations and safety, and continuously seek ways to improve processes and drive operational efficiency. This is a great opportunity for someone who has an interest in traffic signals, enjoys learning about new technologies, and works well in both a team and individual atmosphere.
Prefer a background in transportation with some traffic signal experience. The individual should have a good understanding of computers, systems, and technology. They should demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work by themselves or as part of a diverse team. Any electronics or program management experience would be a plus.
About UsThe Traffic Engineering group at the City of Raleigh is responsible for maintaining the city s traffic signal infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient travel for all road users. Our team focuses on the upkeep and installation of traffic signals, pedestrian signals, other electronic devices that guide, inform, and protect drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. By prioritizing attention to detail and adherence to safety standards, we help maintain a well-organized and accessible transportation network.
Dutiesand Responsibilities

- Perform engineering studies and develop reports from field data to improve traveling efficiencies and safety
- Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory standards, service quality, operational and organizational policies and procedures
- Assist Engineers in data gathering and implementation for improvements.
- Oversees projects and programs dealing with traffic signals and other various electronic devices
- Serves as a technical resource and liaison for engineering department and contractors, consultants, developers, community groups, commission, agencies, City departments, private entities and other stakeholders
- Responds to inquiries, requests and complaints; performs research; provides consultation; and identifies and resolves issues
- This role will require the operation of a City-owned vehicle as a part of their regular duties
Education and Experience:
Bachelor s Degree in Transportation Planning, Urban/Regional Planning, Transportation Engineering, or related field or related field; 3 to 5 years’ experience in transportation, urban or regional planning, transportation engineering, or related work
OR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Licenses or
Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
