The Solid Waste Equipment Operator I performs intermediate semi-skilled work operating sanitation and related equipment in the collection and transportation of residential solid waste; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Solid Waste Supervisor.
Physical RequirementsThis is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, crouching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels;
visual acuity is required for depth perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
- Operates solid waste collection trucks and related equipment.
- Operates residential solid waste collection truck picking up household refuse, yard waste, and other materials as directed.
- Operates boom truck picking up limbs, brush and appliances.
- Operates commercial solid waste collection truck on interim or training basis.
- Transports trash and garbage to disposal site.
- Operates hydraulic mechanisms for compressing and dumping refuse.
- Performs minor maintenance duties on equipment such as changing oil and tires and greasing.
- Cleans refuse truck and equipment.
- Picks up dead animals as directed.
- Collects yard waste such as limbs and vines.
- Emergency call backs: storm prep and clean up.
- Assists with snow and ice removal; cleans catch basins; picks up litter.
- Clears and trims trees; mows grass.
- Operates dump truck, roller, box blade, tractors, sweeper, backhoe.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in the operation of automotive equipment.
Possession of a NC CDL Class B License.
- General knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
- Thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work.
- Skill in the operation of automotive equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
- Ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment.
- Ability to read and write.
- Good physical condition.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
