Vehicle Equipment Repair Technician
NC State University’s Fleet Services team seeks a skilled technician to diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide range of vehicles and equipment—from small engines and utilities to heavy‑duty units such as trailers, backhoes, and utility vehicles. The role emphasizes electrical systems, drive trains, brakes, suspension, hydraulics, and wiring diagnostics while upholding the highest standards in safety and service quality.
Key Responsibilities- Diagnose and repair small, light, medium, and heavy‑duty equipment, including weed‑eaters, chainsaws, mowers, utility vehicles, trailers, backhoes, and light‑duty vehicles.
- Conduct diagnostics of lighting systems, complex wiring issues, engine performance, drivetrain function, brakes, suspension, hydraulics, and noise‑related concerns.
- Follow industry service guidelines and obtain and follow relevant procedures.
- Use hand tools, scanners, specialized diagnostic equipment, and visual inspections to resolve equipment issues.
- Maintain accurate service records in the fleet management system.
- Monitor repair trends, part quality, delivery times, costs, and vendor performance to drive efficient service.
- Build and maintain strong vendor and customer relationships to manage costs and enhance fleet longevity.
- Analyze repair patterns on specific makes and models to proactively plan and prevent potential breakdowns.
- Lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally, with reasonable accommodations.
- High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
- Demonstrated experience in automotive, equipment, or small engine repair, including gas and diesel systems.
- Proven ability to diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems using industry‑standard tools and equipment.
- Competence with basic computer applications for email communication, service documentation, and work order management.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability skills, with a commitment to quality service and continuous improvement.
- Valid driver’s license required;
North Carolina driver’s license must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained.
