We are seeking a skilled and safety focused Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Landscape Maintenance Unit. In this role you will operate various types of heavy equipment for landscape maintenance including A-Boom and knuckle boom loaders; assist with planting flowers, trees, and shrubs; operate snow and ice removal equipment; operate anti-icing equipment.

Joining our Transportation Maintenance Division will provide an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as sidewalks, curbs and gutter, asphalt, and storm drains. As a member of our 222 person staff, you will contribute to maintenance of 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks; the upkeep of over 33,000 curb ramps; and the protection of 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes connecting more than 32,000 drainage inlets.
The Transportation Landscape Maintenance Unit is responsible for maintaining medians and rights-of-way throughout the City by trimming trees, bushes, and grass, and by planting various trees and plants each season.
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
Responsibilities- Operates various types of heavy equipment including knuckle boom loader, A-Boom loader, landscaping equipment, automated leaf trucks, dump truck with walk behind leaf machines, anti-icing equipment, snow and ice removal equipment
- Hauls equipment, tools, and staff to job sites
- Oversees and performs semi-skilled general maintenance
- Selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks
- Oversees and performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
- Inspects and maintains tools and equipment by changing out worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and/or cleaning equipment
- Inspects facilities and structures; identifies and documents required repairs
- Has the skills, ability, and desire to train and develop others.
- Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 1 to 3 years' experience in medium to heavy construction equipment operation or related work.
OR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.
Licenses or Certifications- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

Work Environment and Physical Effort
Very Heavy:
Exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, more than 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, construction site, or in a vehicle. Employees may occasionally work in confined spaces, warehouse environment, or shop environment.
Work ExposuresThere is frequent exposure to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and loud noises. Employees may occasionally be exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate, communicable diseases, and toxic or caustic chemicals or substances.
