Job Duties

Become a vital part of NC State University’s Building Maintenance and Operations team as an HVAC Technician—a hands‑on role where your expertise helps ensure the safety, comfort, and functionality of our campus buildings. This position plays a key role in supporting critical infrastructure by maintaining, repairing, and operating HVAC systems, steam/hot water boilers, and related equipment. In addition to HVAC responsibilities, this role involves performing general building maintenance, including electrical and plumbing work, within an assigned service zone.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain, repair, and install plumbing systems and fixtures, including pipe cutting, threading, assembling, and valve installations
  • Perform electrical tasks up to 600V, including maintenance of panels, breakers, motors, and lighting systems
  • Troubleshoot and service HVAC control systems (temperature, humidity, pneumatic valves, and sensors)
  • Diagnose and repair boilers, turbines, pumps, steam lines, pressure‑reducing stations, and insulation systems
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on refrigeration and A/C units according to manufacturer standards
  • Lead and mentor others in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and control system repairs and maintenance
  • Utilize extension ladders and high lifts to safely access and perform repairs and maintenance at various heights
  • Enter and operate effectively within confined spaces following all established safety protocols
  • Participate in a mandatory quarterly on‑call rotation program, requiring the carrying of a pager or equivalent communication device for one full week, occurring every ten to fourteen weeks
