The City of Raleigh is seeking enthusiastic Summer Sailing Instructors for Lake Johnson Park. Sailing Instructors are responsible for providing outstanding customer service and facilitating a memorable program experience. Lake Johnson Park comprises a 150‑acre lake and 350 acres of wooded park and nature space. The Sailing Instructor is a key member of our staff, contributing to our team by working with patrons through educational experiences.
Successful candidates will lead sailing programs, effectively communicate with other staff members, and adapt to dynamic work environments in the classroom and in the field. The position will attend all City trainings and perform instructional duties as required.
- Providing outstanding customer service to the public
- Be familiar with the facility and City programs
- Leading (either solo or with a co‑instructor) in a variety of sailing programs
- Helping maintain and clean program equipment and materials
- Enforce the rules and guidelines of the facility
- Administering First Aid as needed
- Assist facility staff with emergency and medical response
- Most programs will follow a pre‑determined curriculum, while others will allow the instructor the opportunity to work with park staff to determine the program curriculum
- Conduct safety checks to ensure a safe program environment
- Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
- Possess excellent communication skills, be self‑motivated, and capable of attending and passing all required trainings, a comprehensive background check, and a controlled substance test
- Applicants must be enthusiastic about working with all populations, display personal maturity, great communication skills, customer service skills, and confidence in dealing with conflict resolution
- Ability to speak, write, etc., in English fluently. Bilingual ability is helpful, but not required
- Reliable transportation is required
- Applicant must be able to work in an outdoor environment, including various weather conditions
- Applicant must be able to walk one mile over uneven terrain with a day pack/first aid kit
- Required to obtain and maintain a First Aid and CPR certification
- Must successfully complete required city trainings within 60 days of hire
- Must be comfortable in a sailboat and kayak
- Must know how to maneuver the craft efficiently and properly demonstrate sailing techniques
- Must be able to swim
- Must be able to lift 45 lbs. independently and 100 lbs. cooperatively
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in summer conditions
- Understanding of outdoor environments and willingness to work in those environments
- Understand the value of outdoor recreation and environmental education for members of the community
- Experience in a Sunfish‑type sailboat
- Experience in teaching/instructing
- Prior knowledge of how to maneuver the kayak craft efficiently
- Prior experience working in a high‑paced environment
- Prior experience working with a boating operation and/or open or green spaces
Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Medium Work:Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
