Position Overview

The Generator Technician I supports the Generator Operations Team by ensuring the reliable operation of emergency power systems across North Carolina State University’s campuses. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, testing, and repair of emergency generators and associated electrical equipment that are critical to campus safety and continuity of operations.

The ideal candidate is technically skilled, safety‑focused, and dependable, with a strong interest in electrical systems and emergency power infrastructure. This role offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment, support essential campus operations, and develop expertise in emergency power generation systems serving Main, Centennial, and Centennial Biomedical campuses. Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Operate, maintain, exercise, test, and repair emergency generators, transfer switches, and associated connections across all campuses.
  • Troubleshoot generator system issues to determine root causes, develop repair methods, identify parts requirements, and establish repair priorities and schedules.
  • Perform inspections of electrical system equipment and facilities to assess condition, identify maintenance needs, and recommend repair priorities.
  • Complete scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on emergency generators and automatic transfer switch gears.
  • Conduct electronic diagnostics, testing, and repairs on generator systems and related equipment.
  • Resolve standard and complex generator issues efficiently to minimize downtime.
  • Coordinate and communicate with generator vendors and service providers to support maintenance and repair efforts.
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and campus stakeholders.
