Our Raleigh Fire Department is hiring two (2)
Senior Fleet Maintenance Specialists to join our team! Fire Department mechanics are assigned to work on fire apparatus only, providing a unique opportunity for focused work.
- Fleet Maintenance Specialist mechanics who obtain an Automative Service Excellence (ASE) certification are eligible for a salary incentive (5%) and certification fee reimbursement

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job‑related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
Responsibilities- Performs advanced fleet repairs and preventive maintenance on fire apparatus such as aerial ladders, fire engines, and heavy‑duty rescue trucks, using the set of tools provided
- Troubleshoot issues with fire pumps, aerial devices, drive trains, cooling systems, and electrical components
High School Diploma or GED equivalent and at least 6 months of training beyond High School in Automotive Repair or related field, with 3 to 5 years’ experience in automotive repair, vehicle electronics, or a related field OR any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.
Licensing and Certifications- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- Automotive Service Excellence certifications (City of Raleigh can provide fee reimbursement for obtaining this certification)
- Work Environment and Physical Effort: Medium:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. - Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), vehicle, or shop environment. Employees may occasionally work in an office or similar indoor environment.
- Work Exposures: There is frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts. Employees may occasionally be exposed to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, or loud noises (85+ decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction).
