We are searching for a responsible Transportation Maintenance Worker who takes pride in getting the job done right. You’ll be individually responsible for sidewalk and public space maintenance, making a difference on the ground, every day.

About Us:

Transportation Downtown Services’ core mission is to ensure Downtown Raleigh’s public spaces and right of way are clean, safe and aesthetically pleasing, providing a high level of customer service 7 days a week. As essential employees extended hours and days are required during special events, seasonal maintenance responsibilities and weather‑related or emergency responses.

Work Hours:

This position will report to work Sunday - Thursday; 6:30 am - 3:00 pm.

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job‑related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Removing litter, small graffiti and stickers, debris, sidewalk vegetation and sediment
  • Seasonal power washing, loose leaf collection, weeding, storm recovery efforts, and snow and ice removal
  • Paver repairs
  • Installation and maintenance of Downtown Raleigh assets, including public space trash/recycling and cigarette receptacles, benches, bike racks, tables, chairs, and umbrellas
  • Data collection and Cityworks reporting
  • Special Events barrier placement and prep/coverage/cleanup
  • Biohazards response to human and pet waste or other bodily fluids (proper protection, resources and training provided)
  • Operating pickup trucks or other small equipment on a regular basis
Education and Experience:

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency;
Less than 1 year experience in construction, maintenance or related work.

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.

Licensing and

Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to walk up to ~10 miles daily, performing manual labor in all types of weather
  • Familiarity with mobile devices and applications
  • Ability to read maps and understand job assignments spatially
  • Uses and properties of landscaping and maintenance equipment
  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices
  • Commitment to consistent on‑time arrival for all assigned workdays
ADA and Other Requirements:

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Medium – Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment:
Employees will frequently work in an outdoor environment, near moving traffic, and will occasionally work in an office environment and on a construction site.

Work Exposures:
Employees will frequently be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles. Employees will occasionally be exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate, extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), communicable diseases, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances and loud noises.
