Position Overview

The primary objective of EMS is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation while preserving patients' dignity and ensuring community safety. EMS personnel provide non‑emergency convalescent transfers, community event stand‑by, and response to emergency calls, delivering immediate care and transport to critically sick and injured patients according to WV EMS Rules and Regulations.

Essential Job Functions
  • Attend orientation, EMS operations, compliance, and emergency vehicle training; maintain EMS certification and other required programs.
  • Provide out‑of‑hospital care and safe ambulance transport following statewide protocols and medical command direction.
  • Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 125 lbs alone and 250 lbs with assistance, at a height of 33 inches, for a distance of 10 ft.
  • Hear, comprehend, and respond to spoken information from co‑workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers, and ambient sounds.
  • Communicate verbally in English via phone and telecommunications; meet the minimum vision requirements for driving in WV.
  • Read and comprehend written materials under stress; document patient information in an approved WV OEMS record system.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills; perform all movements needed for quality patient care.
  • Inspect EMS equipment, ensure adequate supplies, verify proper operation, refuel, fluids, and report maintenance needs.
  • Respond to callbacks or call‑in emergency situations.
  • Assist other emergency personnel and complete tasks assigned by supervisors.
  • Maintain professional appearance and perform general station, training facility, and ambulance upkeep.
  • Conduct event stand‑by operations for sporting events, community festivals, etc.
  • Respond to hazardous material incidents and other uncommon situations, including natural disasters and catastrophic events.
  • Understand stress response, body substance isolation, HIPAA privacy, and personnel interactions.
Requirements
  • General knowledge of EMS operations and ambulance equipment use.
  • Ability to learn through various EMS training methods.
  • Acquisition of knowledge of local road networks and community layout.
  • Skills to open/maintain airway, ventilate patient, administer CPR, and use appropriate medications and defibrillator devices; provide trauma care such as hemorrhage control, shock treatment, wound bandaging, and immobilization.
Working Environment & Conditions
  • EMS operations run 24 h/day, 365 days/year, in all weather conditions.
  • Crews must respond at a moment's notice and remain operational until the situation is resolved.
  • Personnel work in an uncontrolled public arena; mental, physical, and emotional preparedness are essential.
Special Requirements & Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of workforce evaluations or equivalent educational screening.
  • Valid driver's license with good driving history.
  • Pass drug screening; company is drug‑free.
  • Background checks (OIG list, criminal, driving, child/elder abuse, references) conducted prior to offer.
  • Maintain valid telephone number.
  • Hold valid CPR certification and EMT‑P certification with WV OEMS.
  • Maintain valid ACLS, PHTLS, PALS certifications.
  • Proof of TB and hepatitis vaccinations.
