Medical Assistant II Certified – Urogynecology (Rex)

Position overview:

Provide routine clinical and administrative support in an outpatient urogynecology clinic at UNC Health. Works under the supervision of the provider and general direction of the manager/supervisor.

The Medical Assistant II, Certified will assist providers during examinations and procedures, perform rooming, phlebotomy, medication administration, and administrative tasks such as patient registration and appointment scheduling. The role includes maintaining exam rooms, sterilization of instruments, and quality and safety duties.

• Perform rooming and intake, collecting vital signs, height, weight, and visit reason data.
• Collect patient and family history, including medical and social history.
• Review current medication lists, allergies and preferred pharmacy.
• Assist providers during treatments, examinations, and procedures.
• Collect specimens and perform phlebotomy.
• Administer medications under provider direction.
• Perform tests such as EKG and eye exams under provider direction.
• Determine if routine health screenings are needed.
• Ensure exam/procedure rooms contain appropriate supplies, equipment, forms and educational materials.
• Give patients after‑visit instructions and educational materials as directed.
• Prepare, clean, stock and maintain exam and treatment rooms.
• Clean and sterilize instruments.
• Assist with registration, check‑in/check‑out, appointment scheduling, and referral scheduling.
• Answer clinic telephone and manage in‑basket tasks under provider or nurse direction.
• Assist in emergency situations as directed.
• Precepts new medical assistant/credentialed hires and externs; trains other assistants in clinic procedures.
• Assists physician with preventive health measures for panel patients.
• Performs clinic‑based quality or safety duties (e.g., safety coordinator, immunization registry, medication audits).
• Manages clinic supply ordering.

• No specific education required if other qualifications are met.
• Completion of a Medical Assisting program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES is strongly preferred.

• Medical Assistant certification from AAMA, AMT, CCMA, NRCMA, or NCMA.
• Basic Life Support Certification from AHA or ARC.

• At least one year of full‑time experience as a certified Medical Assistant.
• Demonstrate competencies outlined in the Medical Assistant, Certified Advancement Worksheet during application and interview.

• Ability to perform essential job functions as outlined above.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Positive engagement with patients, families, staff, and providers.
• Ability to use computer to document required information into the electronic medical record.
