Shifts:

  • Three (3) 12-hour night shifts.
  • Any combination of shifts.
Responsibilities and Scope

Provide clinical assessment, physiological monitoring and testing to assist with diagnosis, management, and prevention of sleep related disorders using diagnostic and therapeutic tools. This includes polysomnography, scoring of clinical events, generating reports, titration of positive airway pressure devices, oximetry, capnography, actigraphy, nocturnal oxygen, screening devices, and questionnaires for patients of all ages.

Duties by Level

Level 1

  • Verify the medical order and protocol.
  • Explain the procedure and orient the patient to the sleep center.
  • Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning.
  • Perform routine PAP mask fitting.
  • Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
  • Assist with following "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values.
  • Assist and observe polysomnography data acquisition.
  • Document routine observations to facilitate scoring and interpretation of results.
  • Assist with appropriate interventions (e.g., BPAP, O2 administration).
  • Assist with “lights on” procedures to verify data integrity and complete data collection.
  • Perform routine polysomnography data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality.
  • Identify and report signal abnormalities.
  • Demonstrate age-appropriate care for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Level 2

  • Perform all Level 1 duties.
  • Review history, physical information, medications, and study protocol.
  • Prepare and calibrate equipment and make adjustments if necessary.
  • Perform "lights out" procedures to establish baseline values.
  • Independently perform routine and CPAP/split polysomnography data acquisition and adjust as needed.
  • Implement appropriate interventions (e.g., BPAP, O2 administration).
  • Perform "lights on" procedures to verify data integrity and complete data collection.

Level 3

  • Perform all duties of Level 1 and 2.
  • Collect, analyze and integrate patient information to determine final testing parameters in consultation with ordering physician and protocols.
  • Explain pre-testing, testing and post-testing procedures to the patient.
  • Perform routine and complex PAP mask fitting and data acquisition across PAP/split/BPAP/ASV modalities.
  • Follow procedural protocols (e.g., MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration) to ensure data quality.
  • Oversee complex procedures and interventions; perform maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Develop clinical standards and generate requisitions or check-ins as needed.
  • Assign nightly workload and process daily charges; serve as charge tech as needed.
Qualifications

Education

  • Level 1: High school diploma or GED or 1 year of post-secondary education, or current enrollment in an accredited program leading to an associate degree with emphasis in polysomnography.
  • Level 2: Associate degree in a health-related field preferred, or completion of a polysomnography program of at least 1 year, with state license and/or nationally accredited facility.
  • Level 3: Associate degree preferred in polysomnography or related field, or completion of a polysomnography program of at least 1 year with license.

Experience

  • Level 1: With an associate degree, no experience required; otherwise 6 months of direct patient care.
