Overview
Lab Manager – Biotech Teaching responsible for maintaining classroom laboratory facilities, ensuring safety, managing inventory, supporting courses, and acting as the facilities liaison and outreach representative in the Biotechnology Teaching Program.
Responsibilities- Organization and Operation of BIT Teaching Labs
- Maintain supplies and reagents, monitor inventory, and work with the Business Officer to order materials on time.
- Maintain a chemical inventory list and arrange proper disposal with the Department of ESH.
- Maintain lab equipment in working order, coordinate with maintenance and repair representatives, and schedule Planned Maintenance Agreements around class schedules.
- Serve as Capital Asset Coordinator to add new equipment and maintain annual inventory.
- Collaborate with faculty and instructors to ensure adoption of organizational systems.
- Prepare materials for BIT 410/510 (Core Course) lab sections.
- Assist instructors with advanced lab classes as time allows.
- Safety Officer
- Ensure laboratory spaces comply with current university health and safety specifications.
- Ensure faculty, instructors, and students follow safety regulations and use appropriate PPE.
- Briefly instruct classes on safety requirements at the start of each course.
- Building and Facilities Liaison
- Coordinate with housekeeping and facilities for repairs, renovations, and upkeep using university systems.
- Serve as program liaison for access-related projects and inform faculty and staff of major impacts.
- Manage distribution and inventory of keys to program rooms or offices.
- Attend weekly group meetings with faculty and staff.
- Willingness to participate in outreach programs such as NC School for the Deaf and University Open House.
- Supervision of Undergraduate Laboratory Assistants
- Train and supervise undergraduate students for lab prep or cleanup and monitor working hours.
- Serve as the main point of contact with vendor sales representatives.
- Maintain inventory of capital assets through the university system.
- Help select undergraduate student laboratory assistants, monitor and assign tasks, and coordinate their work with instructors' needs.
- Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology or related field required; master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
- Knowledge of lab safety practices and sterile technique essential.
- Other Required Qualifications
- Working knowledge of biotechnology research materials, equipment, reagents, and mammalian cell culture sterile technique.
- Familiarity with standard molecular biology equipment and tools, and desire to learn maintenance and operation of analytical equipment.
- Organizational and communication skills, and ability to work within a varied team setting essential.
- Coordinate inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies and lab instruments necessary to lab operations and support ordering with the Business Officer.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in a Life Science or related field preferred.
- Experience working in a research laboratory environment.
- Highly organized.
