The Controller is the senior accounting and financial control leader for a insurance organization
, responsible for financial integrity, regulatory compliance, internal controls, and financial reporting across the Company, its subsidiary, and Holding Company. This role serves as a strategic partner to the CFO and works closely with actuaries, auditors, regulators, and third-party administrators.
The Controller owns the company’s accounting framework, statutory and GAAP reporting, and financial governance. This role goes beyond transaction management and focuses on financial accuracy, regulatory excellence, and decision support while leading and developing the accounting function.
Key Responsibilities- Own the integrity and accuracy of all accounting data across the Company, subsidiary, and Holding Company
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes under both GAAP and Statutory (NAIC) accounting principles
- Prepare and review consolidated financial statements and executive-level reporting packages
- Serve as the primary authority on accounting policy, interpretation, and application
- Prepare and file NAIC quarterly and annual statements
, including all required disclosures - Ensure ongoing compliance with federal, state, and local insurance regulatory requirements
- Coordinate regulatory filings, tax returns, and compliance documentation
- Act as the primary accounting liaison with regulators and external auditors
- Design, implement, and continuously improve internal controls to safeguard company assets
- Establish, document, and enforce accounting policies and procedures
- Identify financial and compliance risks and proactively recommend mitigation strategies
- Oversee banking activity including ACH payments, cash movements, and transaction verification
- Partner with third-party administrators (TPAs) to reconcile investment activity
- Prepare Schedule D reporting, related footnotes, and investment disclosures
- Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules
- Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic reforecasts
- Analyze financial results, trends, and variances to support executive decision-making
- Prepare ad hoc financial analyses and special reports for leadership and board-level review
- Partner with the CFO to evaluate, implement, and maintain financial systems including general ledger and expense reporting platforms
- Ensure system integrity, data accuracy, and scalable accounting processes
- Drive process improvements to increase efficiency and reporting quality
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, including direct supervision of one staff accountant
- Cross-train team members to ensure business continuity and coverage
- Collaborate closely with actuaries, auditors, consultants, HR, and payroll providers
- Maintain strict confidentiality of financial information and strategic plans
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Mathematics
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience within the insurance industry
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and NAIC statutory accounting
- Proven experience with regulatory filings, audits, and financial controls
- CPA required
- MBA or advanced degree
- Experience working directly with actuaries and TPAs
- Background in multi-entity or holding company structures
