Overview

The Technical Director (TD) is responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of productions at [Theatre Name]. This role ensures that sets, lighting, sound, and backstage operations are safe, effective, and aligned with each production's artistic vision. The TD works closely with directors, designers, and volunteers to bring productions to life in a supportive, community-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities Production & Design Support
  • Collaborate with directors and designers to plan and execute technical elements of each production
  • Oversee set construction, load-in, strike, and storage
  • Supervise lighting, sound, and projection setup as needed
  • Attend production meetings and technical rehearsals
Safety & Facilities
  • Ensure all technical work follows basic safety standards and best practices
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and technical spaces
  • Identify facility or equipment issues and recommend solutions
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteer crews (set construction, run crew, board ops, etc.)
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for volunteers of all experience levels
Budget & Planning
  • Assist with technical budgets and material purchasing
  • Track technical inventory and supplies
  • Help plan long-term technical improvements for the theatre
Qualifications
  • Experience in theatre technical production (professional or community theatre)
  • Knowledge of basic scenic construction, lighting, and sound
  • Ability to lead and collaborate with volunteers
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Commitment to community theatre values and teamwork
Preferred (but not required)
  • Experience in a Technical Director or similar leadership role
  • Familiarity with small-venue or multi-use performance spaces
  • Basic knowledge of theatrical safety practices
Time Commitment

Varies by production; typically increases during build weeks and tech rehearsals.
