System Engineer – Pitt & Greene Electric Membership Corporation

Pitt & Greene Electric Membership Corporation is seeking a System Engineer to help ensure safe, reliable, and efficient electric service for our members. This role plays a key part in long range system planning, system reliability, and field engineering activities that support the Cooperative’s mission.

About the Role

The System Engineer develops and implements plans that maintain and improve the Cooperative’s electrical distribution system. This includes system design, inspections, power quality analysis, mapping, and supporting both office and field operations. The position reports to the Director of Engineering and works closely with operations, engineering, and member services teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop long range construction, maintenance, and replacement plans for electrical lines, substations, and related facilities.
  • Ensure effective coordination of system design, construction, operations, and maintenance.
  • Conduct system inspections and analyses to support uniform construction standards, adequate maintenance, and reliable service.
  • Research and recommend operational or equipment changes to improve reliability and reduce costs.
  • Maintain electric system maps, records, and reports.
  • Inspect and assist with testing of CT rated services.
  • Inspect substations, analyze data, and report abnormalities.
  • Install and analyze power quality equipment at member locations.
  • Develop switching orders, load transfer reports, and outage reports.
  • Assist with computer related issues as needed.
  • Administer infrared thermography and other special projects.
  • Promote teamwork, professionalism, and positive morale across the organization.
  • Interact courteously with members, employees, contractors, and the public.
Knowledge & Technical Skills
  • Understanding of electric utility operations and ability to learn the service territory.
  • Ability to learn and apply safety rules and regulations.
  • Familiar with SCADA, GIS, TWACS, load control systems , and related technologies.
  • Ability to develop plans, budgets, procedures, and technical reports.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to manage digital records and data.
Required Skills & Abilities
  • Self motivated with the ability to work independently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license
  • Ability to evaluate problems logically and develop sound solutions.
  • Ability to perform field inspections, including stooping, bending, crawling, and walking over uneven terrain.
  • Ability to drive up to 50 miles one way, including maneuvering in tight areas.
  • Ability to work effectively with Cooperative personnel, members, and external partners.
  • Ability to learn technical information such as REA construction standards, inspection techniques, SCADA functions, and related engineering practices.
  • Ability to work during extreme weather conditions and major outage events, day or night.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or related engineering field preferred.
Working Conditions
  • Primarily office based with climate controlled environment.
  • Regular fieldwork in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, high humidity, dust, pollen, etc.).
  • Required availability during major outages or emergency restoration events.
