Job Duties
Primary purpose: cogeneration system generates steam for campus and UNC Hospitals, supplies about 30% of peak campus electrical load.
Responsibilities include installation, preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of power plant boilers and associated plant auxiliary equipment and fuel handling systems.
Examples of equipment: PLCs, CDS, VFD, VDS, plant electrical systems (12.47kV, 4.16kV, 2.3kV, 480V, 120/280V, 480V motor control centers), CEMS, scientific analyzers for water chemistry, steam turbine and diesel generator voltage regulators and governor control systems, electrical protective relaying.

- Associate’s degree in electronics or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Experience repairing and maintaining electrical/electronic equipment or systems.
- Intermediate skill level in instrumentation, controls, and electrical (IC&E).
- Ability to work independently with minimal instruction and direction.
- Comfortable working in extreme weather conditions, confined spaces, and on a single or stationary position for extended periods.
- Valid NC driver’s license not required; commercial driver’s license not required.
- Work in extreme heat or cold, direct sun, precipitation, and wind.
- Must be able to ascend/descend stairs in buildings without an elevator.
- Will require entering confined spaces or hazardous environments with appropriate PPE.
- Position supports the Cogeneration Facility and Manning Drive Steam Plant operating 24/7/365; may require reporting to work during adverse weather events or public health emergencies.
