About the DepartmentNC State University Facilities Division manages more than 16.7 million square feet of built space and 4,733 acres of campus infrastructure through core departments such as Design & Construction, Business Operations, Campus Operations and Maintenance, and Campus Planning and Strategic Investment. The Central Utility Plant supports the university’s thermal plant operations.
Position SummaryThe primary purpose of the Electronics Specialist role is to identify and analyze issues related to utility plant control or metering systems and provide effective solutions. The role involves routine preventive maintenance and assistance with non‑routine meter and control installations, leveraging electronic principles and troubleshooting support for thermal plant control systems, network communications, SCADA systems, and energy metering.
Key Responsibilities- Troubleshoot mechanical, electromechanical, electronic, and digital control systems on thermal plant equipment such as chillers, boilers, pumps, fuel systems, and cooling towers.
- Repair electronic devices including meters, controllers, and computers, as well as subsystems such as valves, actuators, transmitters, and sensors.
- Utilize specialized test equipment (volt/amp meters, power meters, pressure calibrators) to diagnose and repair non‑standard electronic devices and systems.
- Service and maintain digital/electronic control systems within the thermal plant.
- Perform preventative maintenance on metering and control devices to ensure operational efficiency.
- LIFT, carry, and maneuver materials weighing 60–90 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Wear and utilize required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, safety shoes, ear plugs, and additional site‑specific gear such as a respirator, welding leathers, welding shield, and hard hat.
- This position is designated as mandatory personnel for the university and may require reporting to work during adverse weather conditions, even if the university operates on an alternate schedule.
- Other duties as assigned.
Associate’s Degree in Electronics or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience troubleshooting commercial/industrial boiler/chiller/cogeneration thermal plants, energy measurement systems, and related controls/software.
- Experience with Honeywell HC900 PLC hardware, current and voltage control loops, and field devices from Rosemount, Honeywell, and Foxboro.
- In‑depth understanding of commercial/industrial HVAC and energy measurement systems and related controls/software.
- Effective oral and written communication skills necessary to interact productively with supervisors, colleagues, and the general public, and to accurately understand work assignments and official communications.
- Valid driver’s license required. Must be a North Carolina driver’s license obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained.
