Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively looking for a Rail Crossing Safety Engineer to join our Raleigh office. The Rail Crossing Safety Engineer I contributes to a variety of projects related to rail, railroad crossing safety, rail crossing signal concept layout design, and transit design projects to assist with field work and develop plans for projects across the United States.
Experience working with state DOTs, freight, or transit railroads is preferred but is not required. This role helps to meet various civil engineering project requirements and will be given opportunities as a client-facing team member.
This role requires the ability to work in the field, work with Micro Station design software, develop reports, occasional coordination with clients, senior management, and senior engineers to move projects through the field evaluation, development, and construction process. Work will be performed under the supervision of a Senior Rail Crossing Safety Professional Engineer on small and large scale infrastructure projects that impact rail and transit facilities.

- Complete tasks assigned
- Works under the supervision of Senior Rail Engineer / Project Manager
- Responsible for collecting field data, documenting and reporting field conditions and findings
- Drafts design drawings
- Must be willing and able to travel up to 50% of the year; 30% of the travel involves overnight stays. Travel may occur weeks at a time.
- Can pass background check
- Has valid Driver's License and a clean driving record
- Micro Station / Geopak or AutoCAD or Civil 3D design software experience (and willing to learn Micro Station)
- Microsoft Office software experience
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Preferred experience working with railroads

Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, other engineering degrees will be considered if work experience is related to the transportation industry
- 0-2 years of progressive engineering experience including knowledge and experience in transportation roadway or railway design
- Experience working with railroads, state DOT's, or transit authorities preferred, but not required
- Micro Station / Geopak or AutoCAD or Civil 3D design software experience (willing to learn Micro Station) preferred
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
