We are currently seeking an environmental engineer to support a wide variety of environmental projects with experience in solid waste/landfill design and permitting, and construction in North Carolina.

• Maintaining liaison with individuals and units within or outside the organization.
• Acting independently on technical matters pertaining to your specialty field and assisting the Sales groups with new business development activities within your areas of expertise.
• Developing as a leader of technical and professional staff, acting as a mentor for lower‑level employees, and planning, developing, coordinating, and directing several small to large projects or a project of major scope and complexity.
• Working with a few (3 to
  5) subordinate supervisors or team leaders, at least one of whom would be at level V.
• Directing the work of a staff of typically 5 to 10 engineers and scientists.
• Evaluating progress and results obtained, and recommending major changes to achieve overall objectives.
• Conceiving, planning, and conducting research in problem areas of considerable scope and complexity.
• Serving as the technical specialist in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for an assigned responsibility area such as subject matter, function, type of facility or equipment, or product.
• Keeping abreast of new methods and developments affecting CDM Smith in order to recommend changes to current programs, or new programs warranted by such developments.

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within 18 months of hire, promotion, or transfer.
• Five years of related experience; domestic and/or international travel may be required.
• Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

An appropriate and valid driver’s license is required.

• NC PE with experience in solid waste/landfill design and permitting, and construction experience for at least 5 years in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
• Experience with supervision and mentoring of junior engineers and in construction management; excited to develop experience across a range of managerial and technical skills.

Approximately 20% of travel required.

• Demonstrated experience with solid waste programs and regulations in North Carolina.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• In‑depth knowledge of project goals, drivers, strategies, risks, and opportunities.
• Ability to interact with varying levels of staff, subcontractors, and vendors.
• Good interpersonal and presentation skills for interacting with team members and clients.
• Ability to process a large volume of requests as necessary.
• Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Civil 3D, and CAD.
• Excellent organizational skills to balance and prioritize work.
