What You'll Be Doing

Are you a licensed engineer who is inspired by energy efficiency in commercial buildings? If yes, see what Wake County General Services Administration (GSA) has to offer. We are looking for our next Senior Energy Engineer to provide professional guidance and leadership in energy management as well as improving and maintaining a variety of facilities. This position includes analyzing and presenting data and making repairs and improvements in energy efficiency in the building portfolio and serving as Project Manager for energy projects.

GSA’s portfolio includes nearly 200 buildings, totaling over 5 million square feet, ranging from cutting‑edge new construction to some of the oldest and most unique high‑rises in North Carolina (courthouses, EMS stations, libraries, health centers, detention centers, etc.). Every day brings new challenges and keeps you within the county, primarily traveling from Apex to Zebulon.

Essential Functions

This position is responsible for specializing in Mechanical & Electrical projects such as HVAC controls, LED lighting, retro commissioning and solar PV & EV charging projects. It assists in energy analysis and long‑term planning for the entire building portfolio to reduce utility and operating costs and advance the county’s strategic goals. The Physical Plant has four work groups—General Trades, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing—where this engineer provides guidance on problem solving, modernizing systems, and coordinating resources, especially related to optimizing facility energy use.

The Senior Energy Engineer also supports Wake County’s Energy Advisory Commission and works closely with Facilities Design & Construction to ensure buildings are built sustainably and maintainably.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facility Management:
    Keep Wake County facilities, building systems, and equipment operating consistently and efficiently—assist Trades Supervisors with troubleshooting system failures and ensuring code compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Project Management:
    Function as or work collaboratively with Project Managers to establish scope, budget, design, schedule, and implementation of projects.
  • Data Analysis:
    Analyze utility data and building system information to identify meaningful trends that inform decision‑making and interpret diagnostics on system operations to maintain core building systems.
  • Presentations:
    Craft and deliver detailed presentations on energy concepts for broad audiences.
  • Leadership:
    Provide guidance to all related trades groups through strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems, and general construction principles.
  • Planning:
    Assist in the planning of CIP projects (Energy Conservation Measure CIP) and collaborate with trade groups to ensure technology implementation has a defined maintenance plan.
The Basics (Required

Education and Experience )
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facility Management or related field
  • Five years of job‑related experience
  • A valid driver's license and a safe driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred

Education and Experience )
  • Project management related certification (PMP)
  • CEM or PEM certification
  • Eight years of experience in engineering or architecture‑related field
  • Five years or more experience in managing projects
  • North Carolina Professional Engineering License or Architecture Registration
  • Firm grasp of mechanical, electrical and plumbing operations along with general construction knowledge
  • Two years direct experience with Building Management Systems / Building Automation Systems or Building Commissioning
