Description of Work
The purpose of this position is to teach content focused on improving basic skills in core mathematics areas through individual, small group, and whole class instruction, providing targeted remediation and enrichment as needed. The intent of this position is to deliver direct math instruction to offenders aged 18 to 22 to support their attainment of a high school equivalency diploma.

This is a full-time, permanent and continuing position (40 hours per week) with state benefits. This is a year-round position.

Management preference for candidates who can show evidence of:

Certification in multiple subjects (e.g., math and science).

Experience with educational practices for at‑risk students.

Experience preparing lessons aligned to College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), Common Core Standards (CCS), and the NC Standard Course of Study to meet student needs.

Experience teaching math across varied academic performance levels.

Experience using diverse instructional methods that follow best practices and meet student needs.

Experience developing, implementing, and communicating classroom management plans that address diverse behaviors and provide supports for academic and behavioral issues.

Experience keeping accurate records (attendance, grades, formative and summative performance, assessment results, anecdotal notes).

Experience aggregating, disaggregating, and interpreting standardized tests and assessment (formative and summative) data effectively.

Strong oral and written communication with stakeholders and collaborative work with colleagues to support school culture.

Experience using technology productivity tools and software (including Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, etc.).

Flexibility in expectations and instructional plans in a changing environment.

This position is located within the academic school at Foothills Correctional Institution, Morganton, NC (Burke County).

Reporting to the School Principal, the Math Teacher is a core member of the academic team responsible for implementing and monitoring the school's vision, mission, values, and goals. The teacher must be skilled at organizing and delivering math curriculum to groups of students of all ages, creating a flexible program and a learning environment that supports each student's abilities and personal growth within a minimum and close custody male correctional facility.

The teacher will also perform any additional duties assigned by the principal.

Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Designing math lessons and materials using best practices with clear learning targets and measurable goals aligned to Common Core, College and Career Readiness (CCRS), and NC standards, adapting instruction for students with varied maturity and academic levels using verbal and visual teaching methods.

Providing group and individual instruction informed by formative and summative assessment data to meet individual needs, encourage active and appropriate participation, reach academic goals, and support students' transitions within school, the correctional system, and back to the community.
