The Shelton Challenge Summer Intern supports the Shelton Leadership Center (SLC) by assisting staff in providing positive, impactful learning experiences for Challenge students and staff. Interns work with the full-time office staff to help plan and implement high-quality Challenge programs. This paid internship helps students gain experience in leadership, event planning, and administrative skills. Competitive candidates will have strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work in a team environment.

Past Shelton Challenge experience is preferred
, but not required.

About the Shelton Leadership Center

The Shelton Leadership Center was founded in 2002 by General Hugh Shelton. The program focuses on value-based leadership development for pre-college and college students, professionals, and youth development organizations.

About the Red Hat Shelton Challenge

The Shelton Challenge is a six-day, residential program designed to help high school students develop values-based leadership through mentorship, self-reflection, and shared discovery.

Work Schedule:

9:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday – Friday; times may vary by site locations; on-site 24/7 during challenge sessions. Interns must commit to staying on campus as designated.

Internship Goals and Responsibilities
  • To gain on-the-job experience in project management and administrative responsibilities for a week-long youth leadership program.
  • To assist in planning, coordinating, and implementing four week-long youth leadership programs.
  • To understand how communication, flexibility, organization, and teamwork contribute to program success.
  • To understand relationships with collaborators to meet program objectives and enhance the participant experience.
Job Responsibilities
  • Prepare materials for Challenge weeks, including logistics coordination, registrations, and medical documentation.
  • Collaborate with the program director and other interns to ensure smooth program execution, including procuring supplies and providing on-site support.
  • Capture program moments through photography and occasionally lead training sessions or program sessions.
  • Assist with administrative tasks and material preparation in the office.
Staffing & Supervision

The internship reports to the Program Director for the Shelton Challenge; on-site supervision is provided by the on-site Program Director. Interns will work with summer staff and the broader Shelton Leadership Center team.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements

Position includes outdoor activities. Physical requirements include standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 20 lbs. Valid Class C driver’s license is required; driving ability is required.

Recruitment

Anticipated Hiring Range:
Commensurate with education and experience (approximately $4,000–$4,500 for the entire appointment).
