The University Library Technician applies technical, metadata, and data skills to support the increasingly complex responsibilities of monographic acquisitions and management for the Monographs Unit, as well as the Acquisitions & Discovery department and the Libraries as a whole. This position assists with the acquisition, receipt, bibliographic control, and delivery of materials in all formats to facilitate use of, and access to, the Libraries’ collections.
The position performs original and copy cataloging for monographic resources in all formats and languages using RDA standards and Library of Congress classification and subject headings, with a focus on support for special collections rare books and manuscripts acquisitions and cataloging. The incumbent will train and supervise student workers in receiving and processing library materials.
This position creates and maintains bibliographic, item, financial (purchase order, invoice, PCard receipts), technical, and online data in the library’s integrated library system (ILS), university financial system, electronic resource management system, and related knowledge bases and vendor systems. They participate in managing orders, renewals, statistical reporting, and invoicing for library materials, and communicate with vendors to place orders and track shipments.
They participate in database maintenance and authority control activities in the ILS, and complex electronic resource package work for the Libraries, including title list reconciliation processes, data quality control, cleaning and standardization, vendor and agent communication, knowledge base work, ERM data entry, and ILS work. The position participates in receiving and resolving cataloging concerns and questions across the Libraries, as well as receiving and resolving electronic resource access problems and questions.
The position may also collaborate with the Monographs Unit head to develop acquisitions workflows and/or cataloging guidelines workflows for new formats, and may also assist with the training of new staff.
Required QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications- Library cataloging experience, knowledge of library cataloging standards, and the ability to interpret and apply complex rules for description and access for library resources as well as acquisitions and cataloging policies and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to learn new tools, techniques, and skills in order to locate, analyze, and interpret data in complex online systems
- Ability to foster an environment of belonging and well-being
- Ability to work creatively and collaboratively in a team environment and establish and maintain good working relationships across the library, the university, and with vendors and other stakeholders
- Excellent organizational and time-management abilities, with strong attention to detail and the capacity to prioritize, problem-solve, and exercise sound judgment in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
