About the Department
The Genetic Engineering and Society (GES) Center at NC State University serves as an international hub of interdisciplinary research, engaged scholarship and dialogues surrounding opportunities and challenges associated with genetic engineering and society. The GES Center examines the technical, ethical, and societal dimensions of biotechnology across the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, arts and engineering.
The Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program (CFEP) supports interdisciplinarity and excellence across NC State’s colleges, with a focus on research and teaching. The program’s clusters are designed to build national eminence and partnerships across disciplines.
Position DetailsThe GES cluster is hiring a tenure-track faculty (open rank) with experience in interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary programs.
Interdisciplinary interests may include, but are not limited to:
- Artificial Intelligence and Biosecurity (ethical, legal, policy, or social dimensions)
- Genetics/Genomics (ethical/bioethical, legal, policy, or social dimensions)
- Novel Food Proteins and Sustainability (ethical, legal, policy, or social dimensions)
Applicants with disciplinary training in philosophy/ethics, history, science and technology studies, anthropology, sociology, or related fields are encouraged to apply, with openness to other disciplines in natural or social sciences, risk governance, or humanities. The new faculty member would be placed in a tenure home department and contribute 50% time to their home department and 50% to teaching in the GES minor/certificate programs and/or Genetics and Genomics Academy training programs, supporting collaborative grant development for the GES Center and serving on the GES Center’s executive committee.
The specific home department will be negotiated with the candidate.

QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience
- Earned doctorate in social sciences or humanities, or natural sciences with demonstrated social sciences, humanities, or policy research and expertise.
Rank will be awarded based on education and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Experience and interest in engaging in interdisciplinary and collaborative research
- Demonstrated capacity to work with varied students and to prepare future education professionals to work with varied populations
- Experience working in areas related to the societal dimensions of biotechnologies
Preferred Qualifications
- Record of funded research with grant management experience
- Experience establishing collaborations with private/public partner agencies and schools
- Experience teaching undergraduate or graduate courses
- Experience mentoring doctoral students in funded research
- Interdisciplinary work in areas listed above (see Interdisciplinary Interests)
